Yes, it is correct.

I don't have very good news unfortunately.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Tank you very much so far!

The computer is disconnected and turned of and luckily I don't think my son had any critical information on it. Just used for teenage surfing, gaming, communication and downloading......

I'll do some reading and some thinking (he's away until next week) and let you know about my decision by tomorrow. And maybe I have some questions as well...

And for sure the son and i will have a serious talk about this and that when he comes home.......

Once again thanks a lot for your help so far!:bigthumb:

Hi agin!

My decision at the moment is to let my son take part of the decision, when he comes home (and, if so, do the reinstall him self  with my help). Is it possible to keep this thread open until Wednesday the 13th?

Over to my questions (answers will be input to our discussion whether clean or reinstall):
- Is it in any case risk that this/these backdoor trojans can spread by itself (without coying or moving files) to our other computers in our LAN?
- Will the cleaning procedure be hard work or take long time (comparing to reinstall)?
I think it will be a challenge to change my sons computer behavior but I need some tools. Except from virus protection, firewall and some malware and spyware scanning programs - what can I do? Taking a HJT-log every week for analyse? Is it hard to analyse? (I need some evidences to point at when kicking him out from our LAN)

"- Is it in any case risk that this/these backdoor trojans can spread by itself (without coying or moving files) to our other computers in our LAN?"

There is a risk thought not a great one.

"- Will the cleaning procedure be hard work or take long time (comparing to reinstall)?"

It depends if you have backups. If not, reinstallation will be quicker.

I can give some tips for enhanced security a bit later :) Also tell him to not attempt to download pirated software or visit questionable sites etc; that will increase probability to get infected hugely.

"It depends if you have backups." Of what - harddrive or.....?

I'm looking forward to your security tips. I read an other thread about someone scanning with Kapersky on line (I suppose). Would a weekly scan there be an easy way to get the evidences I need to show him before kicking him out?

"Also tell him to not attempt to download pirated software or visit questionable sites etc;" - this will for sure be part of the serious talk we will have once he gets home!

"Of what - harddrive or.....?"

Yes, I mean drive image from hard drive.

"I'm looking forward to your security tips. I read an other thread about someone scanning with Kapersky on line (I suppose). Would a weekly scan there be an easy way to get the evidences I need to show him before kicking him out?"

It depends, it might not recognize all but it is a good start.

Hi again!

Now we've started that serious discussion regarding computer safety, downloading and other things.....

His decision is to reinstall the hard drive, which I think is a good decision, and he will have to do the work  with my help. And I will make a clean disc image to make it easier the next time (which I hope not will come....).

Can I have your opinion regarding my security solution in our home network. I put Avast, Zone Alarm, SPybot S&D and Ad Aware on each computer (with strict orders to update and run regularly, not always done unfortunately ). I don't use the firewall in Windows. We also have a gateway with a firewall which I have closed for all incoming traffic but is to complicated to handle for outgoing traffic so I have given up on trying (D-link is not my best friend :) ). What do you think - good, good enough, something missing, something I haven't thought of or could be added to my solution....

Thanks a lot for now (but Ill read about your opinion.....)!

Those are fine, below are some optional additions:

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
