System locks up when running Anti-Virus, anti Spyware

Hello :)

How long did the program stay on that object? Are you sure that you just didn't wait enough?

Update

Cursor locked, keyboard locked, monitor locked. Tried to get some kind of response, after 15 minutes or more hit the reset button to restart the computer.

I am going to rerun "drweb" program again this afternoon, but will just have it check drives "D", "E" and "F". If no problems are found on these three drive areas, It will mean the problem is most likely in Drive "C" area somewhere.

Will let you know the results.

John

Update: Re: Check of individual drive areas

Okay I ran drweb-cureit on each of the individual drive areas.

Express scan in each check did not find any viruses. Check of Drive "F" completed its run and did not find any viruses in both normal and safe modes.

Check of Drive "D" and "E" areas on both normal and safe modes on an individual drive basis resulted in system lockup. There was no consistancy in where the program was during its check when lockup occured. NO objects had been listed when lockups happened.

John

Update

1. The 01 - Hosts I have no idea about the four files.
2. Downloaded ATF Cleaner but did not run.
3. Ran HiJack this and fixed 8 of the 11 items you listed. The two R1 - HHKCU and the 04 - HKLM items did not show up.
4. Found and deleted the zw0er_!.dat file
5. Ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner.
Shortly after it started while checking in C:\Windows\System32 it found 1 virus and i1 Infected object. After monitering the program after an hour I had to take the dog for a walk. When I retuned the system had Locked up. Rin time was 01:27:08, scanned objects was 34109, Viruses 3, Infected objects 2, Suspicious objects 2.

It took the program about an hour and 10 nimutes to check the files in C:\Windows. During that time it did not show any aditional viruses etc.

The file that program showed as being checked at lockup was:
C:\Documents and Settings\Adminstrat...ePlayer\History\Summerland-Theme(1).lnk.

I did a visual check of the Administrator files and could not find the above one, Also did a Windows Search with no results.

Since system locked up there was no text file of the Kaspesky to save.

Fere is the latest HiJack this Log also

Hello and sorry for the delay. There were some issues with the connection.

Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop.

Open HostsXpert that you earlier unzipped on your desktop

  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" upper right corner (if available)
  • Click "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File" and then click OK
  • Close HostsXpert
Note; IF you used any custom Hosts (eg. MVPS Hosts), you will have put them back manually

I'm thinking that the freezing may not be malware related. Maybe it is some physical issue with the harddrive. You could install the free trial of HDDLIfe and run some scans that check the health of your drive. --> http://www.hddlife.com/eng/download-freeware.html

Let me know the results and post a fresh HjT log :bigthumb:

Sunday I ran a quick scan with Ad-Aware and it found 3 infections. The quick scan did not lock up so I was able to delete these infections. Here is a partial log from that run.

I also went to the Spyware Warrier site and checked out ewido anti-spyware online scanner and ran that; it found about 21 infections which I was able to delete. But that program locked of before I could do a complete system scan. Here is a copy of the log on the infections it found and that I deleted before the lockup.

After that I ran Windows Live OneCare in a quick scan and it found no infections. Then ran Live OneCare for a full system scan and it lockedup.

This brings you up to date. I'll run HostXpert and the free trial of HDDLife in the morning and post the results after that.

John

Update

Followed your instructions on HostsXpert, when entered OK for Restore Microsoft Original HostFile got an error msg.

ERROR: Cannot create file C:\Windoes\system32]Drivers\ETC\hosts

Then ran HDDLife to check hard drive. Here is the log of that.

Hello :)

So Ad-Aware scan was able to complete? Any other scans that work?

Go to virustotal.com
Copy the following to the box next to "Browse" button:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dvdmqshq.exe
Click on Send
Wait for the scan to end.

Copy & Paste the scan results to here.

Here is the results from cirustotal.com.

0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

BTW: The Ad-Aware was just a quick scan not a full scan.

Hi :)

I think that the main issue is that you have CA and Sophos installed & running at the same time. They're propably conflicting each other and causing this issue.

You should only use one antivirus at the time, so you should install either CA or Sophos via Control Panel...

After that you could try another scan...

Please download MWav:
  • Unzip it to its predetermined directory (C:\Kaspersky)
  • Locate kavupd.exe in the new folder and double-click to Update.
  • If your firewall gives any messages about this program accessing to internet, allow it.
  • If it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying, until you get the actual definition updates.
  • When you see Updates Downloaded Successfully, hit Enter to continue.
  • Restart onto Safe Mode
  • Locate the Kaspersky folder.
  • Locate mwavscan.com and double-click on it to launch the MWAV Scanner.
Now lets do the settings:
  • Leave the Default Settings checked.
  • Add a check to Drives
  • This will light up All Drives
  • Add a check to Scan all Files
  • Click Scan Clean to begin.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
  • Please be sure it has finished before proceeding.
  • Once the Scan has finished, all entries identified as Infected, will be displayed in the lower panel.
  • Highlight everything that is inside the lower panel and hit Ctrl+C at the same time to copy.
  • Open an empty notepad file and paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it. Save the notepad to your desktop, name it as you want (e.g; MWav Results).
Reboot into normal Windows and post the results here along with a fresh HijackThis log. Also post a fresh HjT startuplist log (complete)

MWav etc.

Both CA and Sophos have been deleted from the computer. Only anti-virus program current is Windows Live OneCare.

I downlaoded MWav and installed it following your instructions. Also got the definition updates, then restarted computer in Safe Mode.

When I tried to run mwavscan.com it popped up a mesage that the program was out of date. and to download the tool kit from www.mwti.net. I tried several times with the same response.

I went to that site and the tool kit file was named mwav, exe, I downloaded it and ran that program. It started to extract the files into a folder under Administrator\Local\Temp. There was a browse option but it was not active. While extracting the files it said there were errors in several subfiles.

When I tried to execute the new mwavscan.com there was no response. Also the same file in the C:\Kasperesky folder would no longer respond either.

Thus there was no scan to log.

John

Hmm so you uninstalled those avtiviruses. please post a fresh HijackThis log so that we can see if there are any leftovers that might be bugging us. :bigthumb:
