System slow again

Oops!

Hi,

I just finished the online scan and accidentally (!) closed the tab before saving the log!!! Ooop! I did see at the end that no infected files were found. Would you like me to run it again (it took 2 hours)?
As for how it's running right now, well, I see a bit of difference when I go from one window to another. Where the problem still exists is launching IE or surfing. Sometimes, I just get stuck on a page for no apparent reason and have to close the browser. Could it be that IE is corrupt ans I should re-install it? Or even, do you think I need to repair Windows?

No Another scan is not needed

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools> Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Reset Internet Explorer Setting > Reset......let it do its thing, takes a few seconds. When done, ok your way out. Close IE and then reopen it and see if it it helped

Resteeing IE

I've never tried resetting IE. Do I need to do anything in order to prevent losing anything? In other words, will it erase my favorites or anything else?

It will bring IE back to factory defaults so you may lose somethings, the way I look at it with the problems your having are your options are limited.

Results

Hi,
I reset IE and things are moving considerably faster! The HD is spinning like mad at times (that's been going on for a while and I wonder if it's simply because a)the computer is old and b)the HD is too full!)
I think you were able to help me a great deal and I appreciate it. Now, I guess I have to delete a bunch of things that you asked me to download along the way. Do I simply uninstall them or delete them manually?

Hi,

Glad things are better

This isn't to bad, about a third of your hard drive is free but it could be better.
Drive C: | 71.30 Gb Total Space | 23.83 Gb Free Space | 33.43% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS

Before you start removing things, why don't you post here and post the statistics that I just posted about your drive and ask them to help you remove unwanted programs

You can open OTL and click on Clean Up and it will remove most of the programs we used to clean your system along with there backups, it wont remove Malwarebytes , its the free version and yours to keep.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • WinPatrol Keep this fine program activated to block a lot of threats
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn

The end!

I still have a couple of questions: how much protection do I need?!! I mean, if I download Spyware Guard, for instance, Is it going to interfeer with the other things I have running in the background? Also, can you tell me if I was infected at all? I often thought my problem was more about hardware than viruses. Thanks!

I prefer SG over the Teatimer, its less in your face, but you should not have them both. SG will not interfere with other programs you may have installed
