Ken, It's a real comfort that you've stuck with me on this.
Not a problem, be doing this for years because all the people in the malware removal community are the best people in the world and we love helping nice people like yourself and really despise the scum that write this garbage.

I want to point out that years ago when I got into computing , windows 3.1 was the new kid on the block, about six months later win 95 came out, caught a virus than and it made your screen wobble or some other stupid thing, they where written mostly by kids or people that had nothing better to do, not anymore, all this garbage is written by cyber thieves and there only purpose is to steal anything they can from you.

This is what I need you to do now, uninstall Combofix with these instructions than download a fresh copy and run it please, there will be no need to rename it this time, it should run.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Hi again,

I did the combofix /u thing but it did not ask for input to select 2, just went on to say is now uninstalled.

I downloaded and ran Combofix and it's doing the same "hang" thing with PEV.cfxxe listed in the processes and again at 50%.

I don't know if it is relevent, but right from the start Windows Defender service has been turned off and I get a message on startup telling me that, I can't force it to start in services.msc as it says I have not got suffient priviledges, I was just intending to let the clean up complete and then uninstall and if necessary reinstall.

I expect I'll need to kill the PEV process, but I'm awaiting your say-so.

Here's the log:

Looks good :bigthumb:

I am looking into restoring Eventlog without running CF again if we don't have to.

How are things running now ?

Well it looks OK, but one of the things that alerted me to there being a problem was the Windows Defender not running, and every time I tried to update from the MS Update website, the defender definitions would download but not install. I've just tried that again and it still will not install the definitions (possibly because the Service is not running) what do you think?

Almost everything else is OK but the AVG Free mail scanner had turned itself off some while ago but all the settings are that it is ON. Again if that's damaged I could just uninstall and re-download. Do you think that this is likely? I'm not really worried about email scanning as I use hotmail most of the time.

Lets do this to restore the eventlog

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 and SAVE it to your Desktop.
  • After download has completed,
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the lines of text in the code box below (including blank lines and comments) to your Clipboard by highlighting them with your mouse, then Right clicking and choosing Copy:

Code:
Files to move:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage your system!

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
3. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt

Please post the contents of C:\Avenger.txt; and a new HJT log please

You should still have Inherit on your desktop, drag and drop Windows Defender.exe into it and see if it gets that program running

Hi Ken, we're like old buddies now! I'll need to send you a Christmas card!

I have not used Inherit, so don't have it on the desktop. Where can I get it from and what do I do with it?

Here's the Avenger log - to the untrained eye it looks good, followed by the new HJT log.

Yep, Xmas is just around the corner, the time goes by so quickly :(

We have been though so many programs I thought you had Inherit. What you do with this program is just download it to your desktop and then you drop a program that won't run into it and it changes the permissions to default so it will run, in this case Windows Defender.

But do this first as I see WD running as a service on your system

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then ok when it opens, scroll down to Windows Defender, right click on it and select Properties , make sure the Start Up type is set to Automatic, if not change it to Automatic. Ok your way out.

Then try WD again, if still no go than drop it into Inherit

Download Inherit and save it to your desk top
Drag each of the exe files that you are unable to run into Inherit.exe (must be the exe - not the shortcut)
Then wait for it to say "OK"

Ken,

That's done it for both the AVG (which would not uninstall due to the permissions I guess) and the Windows Defender. Thanks again.

Just to give a little help to you, The avenger program was not quite laid out as you advised (possibly a new version) but non-the-less it was easy to unsderstand and worked.

Does that look as though it is all done? Is there anything else I need to do?

Hello,

Avenger has been around for a long time and I have not used it in awhile so my instructions may be a bit outdated, I will have to look into updating it.

Since we have come so far, what I would do now is to run a free online virus scanner in case we missed a bad file or two.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Ken here it is:

Well, its been a long hard ride and we are finally done :bigthumb: Glad we got that all straightened out for you. Your system appears clean but to be on the safeside I would change all my passwords for sites that you frequent along with any shopping sites, or if you do online banking, change all those passwords. We never know what these infections are truly capable of.

RootRepeal <--Drag it to the trash

TFC <--Yours to keep, run it about once aweek to clean out the clutter.

Avenger <--Drag it the trash

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken

Ken,

I'm truly grateful to you and all your other colleagues who are the true "good guys" out there on the internet. I've been around the clock quite a lot too and began using the internet when it was all about sharing and helping one another. It's great to know there are folks like you who still keep the spirit of the early days alive.

Once again thank you and may I wish you every blessing in your personal life.

Barry
