tracking cookies, few pop-ups, bit of an infection

i understand.
there is still one issue. when i first got infected, my windows firewall got turned off and i have not been able to turn it on. when i try to do it through the security center i am told that security center could not turn it on and i should go to windows firewall in control panel. there i get the message, 'due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display windows firewall settings'. what should i do?

honestly i would leave it turned off and get a better one. there are many available. zone alarm has a basic free version thats easy to use. outpost light and jetico are free but have learning curves.

IMHO a good software firewall is one of the best tools to have.
windows firewall should be turned off if you use another one anyway.
if you want to see if we can get windows firewall working we can proceed that way.
