Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the Perform Full Scan option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found.
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Quick Question on next steps

Hi,

I already have Malware Bytes installed on my computer... and had a scan running while I did the Hijack this log. I allowed it to remove the viruses that it found.

Does this change any of your advice?
Do I need to uninstall the current version of Malware Bytes (I didn't check for updates when I ran the scan)? Should I just send you the log file of the scan I ran last night?

Thanks

And, most importantly thanks so much for agreeing to help me. I am so thankful for this forum and service!!

It is my pleasure. :bigthumb:

Should I just send you the log file of the scan I ran last night?

It is ok...no harm done, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware log and then run RSIT according to mu insturtions in my last post.

main thing for me is to see the Malwarebytes Antimalware log so i know what it removed and running RSIT will give me more information how we can proceed further. please dont run any removal tools while i am helping you.

System Behavior

Here is what I am seeing so far in terms of behavior. I will post the logs tomorrow.

Symptom #1: Internet Access: Wireless is connected, but page will not load. If I turn off Windows Firewall, Internet works again (even if I turn the Windows Firewall back on).

Symptom #2: Virus takes over my computer telling me that my computer is seriously infected with viruses. It looks like it is running all sorts of system scans while flashing messages about viruses on my comtpuer. I cannot get out of the virus program unless I shut down the computer... I'm not sure what triggers this, but it goes away when I restart the computer.

Download and Run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Here you can find a tutorial about Combofix: HOW TO USE COMBOFIX

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. A guide to do this can be found HERE
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
    • If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

IMPORTANT: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Problems with Combo Fix

Hi,

Ran into the following problems trying to disable Virus software. In my system tray, we have an application running called "Viruscan". When I right click on it, there are no options to disable it.

I tried running combo fix without disabling Viruscan, and it asked me "Are you sure you want to put this in the recycle bin". The second time I double clicked on combofix.exe, a yellow alert comes up and it asked me to restart my computer because some files couldn't be created. When we restart the computer we run into the same problem.

Any advice?

Hello!

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Mcafee is interfering with Combofix. Would you be able to uninstall Mcafee while we are cleaning your computer and use a free alternative Antivirus program? Do you have the licence key and the installer for Mcafee?

Can you find these logs:

  • C:\qoobox
    C:\Combofix.txt
    C:\QooBox\LastRun

if you can please post those logs for me to see.

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 4.18.8

Please read HERE the Safer Networking Forums policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs. Please remove it before we can continue any further. Post back when you have done it so we can continue the cleaning process.

NOTE: Even if you are using a safe P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Install Recovery Console via Combofix

Delete the excisting copy of Combofix and follow these instructions to install recovery Console.

***************************************************

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

IMPORTANT: combofix.exe MUST be on your Desktop for us to proceed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  • With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
  • The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
  • Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

    KB310994.gif
  • Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Transfer all files you just downloaded, to the desktop of the infected computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

    RC1-4.gif
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Issues with next steps

1. Removed LimeWire
2. Removed previous version of Combofix.exe from desktop
3. Downloaded new version of Combofix and Windows Home Edition X2 onto jump drive and loaded on to desktop of infected computer
4. When I drop windows onto Combofix the following appears: " The drive or network connection that the "shortcut to combofix.exe link" refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, then try again.
5. After getting this message the first time I re downloaded both Combo fix and Home Edition onto jump drive and again onto home computer and got the same message a 2nd time.
6. The 2nd time I tried to drop Windows onto Combofix...the Combo fix icon moved all around the desktop, making it difficult to drop Windows onto it? Seems pretty viral.

Any advice?

Hello!

I got reply from my colleagues. As you are using jump drive to transfer the Combofix and the Recovery Console package. It seems that error message happens when Combofix is a Shortcut and not a a full program. So something might have happened when transfer was done. One of my collaegues did some testing with that kind of situation.

So redownload the Combofix again and if you use jump drive then make sure that the transfer is complete. Then put the downloaded Recovery Console package also on to the infected computer and try to drag/drop into to the Combofix. Also keep your jump drive on aswell. If it wont work first tme let me know.
