extract the reg file /rightclick on it and choose merge in the context menue, answer yes to the prompt.

I am using a non-english widows version so just to clarify- do you mean the top-most option on the context menu?

If your able to get taskmanager working in normal mode try ending task on explorer then start it again using taskmanager and see if then the taskbar is available ?

Unfortunately, I can only access task manager from safe mode.

Another way is to double left click that reg file then click yes to prompts

You could use system restore to resort to before the infection started
If you do I suggest going back to two or three days before the infection started

Thanks for that suggestion.
I have had a look at some instructions for doing a system restore- but it required the task bar (i.e you start from the "start" button). Is there a way to do a restore from task manager in safe mode?

Hi
"If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes."

You can also get to it from safe mode command prompt only
But you mention the taskbar is avaiable in safe mode correct ?

Hello,

No I can not get the task bar (by which I mean the "Start button") at all. All I can access is the task manager when in safe mode.

You mention there is a way to access system restore from command prompt. Could you possibly point me to directions for that- or any other way of doing it from the task manager.

As far as I can see, all the instructions in the link you directed me to require you to have the "Start" button- so as I don't have that I'm rather stuck at the moment!

System restore done

Hi- I found some instructions and did a system restore from the command prompt.

It seems to have worked as I now have a tasks bar and icons.

HOWEVER- when I try to download updates to Spybot I am unable to get them (I get a bad checksum message) Any ideas as o what might cause that?
