Unsure What Problem I Have

I had a group of spyware programs all culmulate on my computer at once yesterday and I've been trying my best to figure out what to do, but I'm no expert so I hope someone here is able to help me figure it out.

The only one I recognized was VirusBuster, which I got rid of/uninstalled with smitRem. I'm getting random popups for Spyware and Virus Scanners and computer lockups, and a bubble on the taskbar stating "Security warning: your computer may be infected with harmful or unwanted software!" with an icon that is a brownish-red circle with a yellow exclamation mark in the centre. I found someone who had a similar case over here http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8677 and I tried the programs listed in that walkthrough (SmitfraudFix, VundoFix, AVG Anti-Spyware, ATF Cleaner) along with running Ad-Aware (All run in Safe mode). Welcome to the forum, well you have some junk I can see and who knows what may be hidden. If you are not receiving help elsewhere, follow these directions.

1) First, let's check for Smitfraud: Thanks to S!Ri, and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Open Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs. Uninstall PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo if there, if not give this uninstaller a try:

While you are in there, uninstall any other program you know does not belong there, if you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

3) C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe <<< follow the directions in #3 Deactivate the Resident Shield, that will block our fix.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Thanks to sUBs and anyone who helped with this fix.

1. Download ComboFix.exe using either of these links:

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

If the log is large You might need to post half in one reply half in another.

Make sure the computer has been restarted and post the text file from Smitfraudfix, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.


These files may or may not be bad, it is imporant that you delete only the bad ones. My guess is that most will be bad. Use one or more of these free online scanners to find out. Then delete the bad ones:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\XXXXXX.dll <<< example and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now. You may enter as many files as you wish before chosing to delete them, you do not have to do them one at a time.

Once this is done, make sure the computer has been restarted and post the results of the Smitfraud "Clean" function, a new combofix log and a fresh HJT log, make sure Java is updated.

Okay, for some reason I couldn't get HiJackThis to actually allow me to actually use the Delete on Reboot option. Whenever I pressed the button, the program quit. Didn't matter if I was in Safe Mode or not. So I manually deleted all the ones I could that came up in the search as bad, with the exception of one, C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcb.dll, which was the only one that was in use and wouldn't be deleted. All the bcbeg files and zip.exe came up clean in all three of the file scanners, so I left them there.

Thanks for the feedback, this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcb.dll is no doubt a sign of a hidden vundo trojan infection, see this:

I apologize for the difficulty removing those bad files, I usually remove them manually but there were many. I could have given you Killbox to use but HJT usually does the job?

The HJT log is looking good, let's have a look at what the hackers are hiding like this:
Return here C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< right click the .exe and rename it to say ProtonJon.exe or something like that. Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.

No Problem, it will be waiting for you. This problem will not go away on it's own. You can see the junk the hackers were hiding from you now. 02BHO/020 Winlogon. Understand the fix from Atribune we will use may not know the name of some of the files as the hackers can call them what they want. It may take several runs to delete them all. You want to post the Vundofix log and a new HJT log when all files it locates "have deen deleted".

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit

Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Sorry to hear about the missed flight, some good news is that is a clean HJT log. You may rename HJT.exe if your wish. If all is running well then your are good to go.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
