Very Awkward Virus

Hey this is a very awkward problem. I am familiar with the policies of this site, and have trusted this site many times. On this computer ( my brother's ) I cannot directly access any site ( meaning I can get online, but only through links on the homepage, thankfully its google. if I type in the web address it does not connect [firefox] ). iexplore is always running on startup along with ctfmon ( even after disabling in msconfig ). i uninstalled this thing called " Advertisement Service ". I cannot run malwarebytes, spybot, or install HJT. I can run other programs on the computer though. I did not try running HJT from a pendrive, but I thought that might be a bad idea. It took a lot of working just to get to post on this site.

What should I do?

If you cant download any of the tools I am linking you to, then download them to a known clean computer and transfer them by CD to the infected one.

• Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
• Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
• Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
• Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
Please download RootRepeal one of these locations and save it to your desktop

Lets do this.

Download TFC to your desktop

• Close any open windows.
• Double click the TFC icon to run the program
• TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
• Click the Start button to begin the process.
• Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
• The program should not take long to finish it's job
• Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
• if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
• Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Post the report and also a new HJT log please


Now try running RSIT

I did notice some other things though.

1) iexplore ( process not application ) is always open, usually multiple times, and usually plays some sort of audio for many different things

2) Winpatrol isn't starting up ( tied to autostart )

3) Malwarebytes still won't open up.

Have you installed Malwarebytes and it wont run, if so boot to safemode and try to run in it.

To Enter Safemode

• Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
  this will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
• Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

If it still wont run than try this one.

Please download SuperAntiSpyware Free
Install the program

• Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
• Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
• Check: Perform Complete Scan
• Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next <-- Important
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:

• Click: Preferences
• Click the Statistics/Logs tab
• Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log

It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

I couldn't run malwarebytes, nor could I install Superanti-spyware. HJT still won't install.

I can't use a clean computer and transfer yet because I do not have cd's or my flash drives around.

It may take a day or two to try running these programs from cd.

Download this program from a clean computer and burn it to a disk , or if you can download it on your infected one do so.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.

• Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
• Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
• If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

• In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
  • Sections
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
• Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
