Virtumonde and other malware .... really need some advice.

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.

Step # 1 Download AVG Anti-Spyware

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:

Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Please set up the program as follows:

Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
change to inactive.
Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on the Settings tab.
- Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
- Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
- Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
- Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
- Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Step # 2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 3: Boot into Safe Mode

You can go in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Step # 4: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O23 - Service: McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe (file missing)
Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 5 Run AVG Anti-Spyware

Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan your computer.
When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
- Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
- Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
- When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
- Then click the Save Scan Report button.
- Click the Save Report as button.
- Save the report to your Desktop.
Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot your computer.
Now copy the report back to this topic.

Step # 6 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. AVG AntiSpyware Report
2. A fresh HijackThis log

If you can't fit all the logs into one post/reply, then use multiple posts/replies to get all the logs in.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 .
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_07

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 3: Delete bad services

Please open Notepad. Ensure that word wrap is turned off. Click on Format and make sure that there's a tick next to Word Wrap. If there's none, click on Word Wrap to tick it. Copy and paste the following in the code box into Notepad:

sc delete McAfeeFramework

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in fix.bat
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save.

Double click on fix.bat. A Command Prompt window will open and close quickly. That is normal.

Step # 4: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here and save it to your Desktop.

Also delete the CFScript.txt from your Desktop, you will be creating and running a new one.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Step # 5: Run HijackThis

Run HijackThis scans on all three accounts (ndamico, jennie and q014620) and post the logs.

Step # 6: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
- Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
- Scan Options:
- Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:
- Select My Computer
The program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Step # 7 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log (C:/Combofix.txt)
2. Kaspersky Log (KAV.txt)
3. The three Hijackthis Logs (from ndamico, jennie, and q014620 accounts)
4. How is your computer running?/Any problems?

The PC Seems to be ok. Better than it was when I first posted. Alot better!

The 3rd user account (q014620) I deleted but the directory is still there so I can access the old files.

I would keep AVG AntiSpyware on your machine and scan your computer with it at least once a week. When it expires, you will be unable get updates automatically, you will have to update AVG AS manually.

Do you know anything about the following programs?

Log onto the ndamico account and follow the steps below:

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step:

Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :

Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 2: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\profsyxym.html
Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Click Apply.
Click Apply and then Exit Display properties.

Step # 3: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here and save it to your Desktop.

Also delete the CFScript.txt from your Desktop, you will be creating and running a new one.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Step # 4 Post Logs

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see the following:

1. Answers to my questions about Angry IP, Solar Winds, and Ctrl-Alt-Del question.

Yeah .. that came from my previous employer. Company branding was very common place.

If you want to remove QScreenSavers, follow the steps below:

Step # 1: Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Step # 2: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the files/folders I have marked in Red(if found):

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
- Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
- Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
- Select the More options tab
- Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
- This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
  - Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  - Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  - Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  - Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  - Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  - Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
- Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
- Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
- If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
- If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
- Click OK
Use IE-SPYAD Install IE SPYAD. Add another level of protection to your Internet Explorer browser by blocking certain sites that are known to contain malware. IE SPYAD puts several thousand sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. If you happen on a site within its list, they can't hijack you or install anything. Program is free and is updated about once a month. Please follow readme instructions for install; it is a little different. Single user PC use IE Spyad1. Multi user XP PC use IE Spyad2.
Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
You should scan your computer with Ad-Aware as well as Spybot S&D and your anti-virus program on a regular basis. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. There is a good tutorial HERE If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
- Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen
- Click run
- In the dialog box, type services.msc
- hit enter, then locate dns client
- Highlight it, then doubleclick it.
- On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
- Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian and Miranda IM These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
