Virtumonde Infection, Please Help

Hi Blade,

Thanks for the reply!

I have uninstalled Limewire, old Adobe Reader & Adobe Flashplayer and then downloaded new Adobe 9.1 and then the 9.1.2 update.

I did a HJT scan and it did find that entry so I checked it and fixed.

I then did the scary part of dragging the CFScript document into ComboFix and besides being nervous about all the warnings, it started beeping at me telling me to turn off my Norton before proceeding and then it said there was a ComboFix update available which I agreed to and then it started running... kind of scary for us who have no clue what we are doing LOL! ComboFix did reboot and the message when it came back on was not to run any programs until finished but I did notice that my Norton was re-enabled as I had originally disabled it 'until restart' thinking that would be sufficient so I quickly disabled it again - not sure if I was going to screw things up but it seemed to be okay. Whew!

So I have pasted my ComboFix report and my new HJT report as requested. Hope I did everything correct.

Cheers,
Dawn

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hi again Dawn,

Combo run seemed to go pretty well :bigthumb:

I need to make you run it again though cos I forgot to add some items to previous run

Hi Blade,

No problem - not as scary second time round LOL!

What is that crss thingy... I seem to remember it giving me grief a long time ago (I think I was told to disable it from start-up but can't remember all the details). Probably a good thing it's gone but don't know where it came from so would obviously like to avoid getting it on here again.

Anyhow, I pasted new ComboFix log and a fresh HJT log below.

Thanks again!

Dawn

What is that crss thingy... I seem to remember it giving me grief a long time ago (I think I was told to disable it from start-up but can't remember all the details). Probably a good thing it's gone but don't know where it came from so would obviously like to avoid getting it on here again.
It was remnants of infected object probably present in your system earlier. It's gone now :) To reduce infection risks it's recommended to keep system up-to-date. Of applications especially Adobe Reader, Flash, Java and Quicktime Player are those that should be kept updated (if some of those is installed).

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • Double-click OTM.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTM attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade,

I can't thank you enough for helping me complete all of this.. not sure what I was doing most of the time but it seems to have worked!! :bigthumb:

I have done all of the steps you said to do with the exception of the hosts file part - I did go read the tutorial and I couldn't wrap my head around it all as we are currently trying to also get packed up for a holiday. I will definately be back on the site when I get back from holiday and read that through again properly. All of my Internet Explorer settings were already set to your recommendations so that was good. Everything seems to be running good with the exception of getting IE 8 properly configured (when I updated my Quicktime, it was giving me incapatible messages and IE keeps asking me about my "add-ons" stuff like that) but I think I might be able to figure it out when I've got more time and don't have 5 kids to get organized for going away LOL!

I do have a couple of things that I have on my desktop that I downloaded during this process that I'm not sure what to do with - perhaps you can tell me how to uninstall or if I should keep them and use them regularily or something???

First, is Erunt (don't know what this is for)

Second, is Malwarebytes (seems like a good program to maybe run in conjunction with Spybot & Norton?)

Third, is AFT-Cleaner (again, not sure what this is for)

If you could direct me on what these are or if I should uninstall/delete them, I would appreciate it.

Although this has been a long process, I am glad I didn't give up and just take it in for repairs! I want to thank you VERY much for all your time and assistance, it was really appreciated. :bighug:

I hope you have an AWESOME day!!

Cheers,
Dawn

First, is Erunt (don't know what this is for)
Hi,

Erunt is used for backing up registry. It can be uninstalled from add/remove programs.

Second, is Malwarebytes (seems like a good program to maybe run in conjunction with Spybot & Norton?)
I recommend to keep the program and run it occasionally. It works together with your other protection software :)

Third, is AFT-Cleaner (again, not sure what this is for)
ATF Cleaner is for cleaning temporary items. I'd recommend to keep it too and run occasionally (once in two weeks or a month).

For IE related issue thing you might want to try uninstall Quicktime player first to see if it helps. If it doesn't then maybe uninstall and then reinstall IE 8.

Happy holiday to you :)
