Lets do some tidy up.

Go to Start > Run.... Copy and paste the following text into the white box:
ComboFix /u
Click OK.

Run OTL by double clicking on OTL.exe. Click on CleanUp at the upper right corner and close OTL if it is still open.


Congratulations, you are All Clear to go . If you have any more problems, please let me know.

Some tips to help you stay clean and safe:

1. Keep your Windows up to date. Enable Automatic Updates to always update the latest security patches from Microsoft, or you can download from the Microsoft website. Otherwise, your computer will be vulnerable to new exploits or malwares.

2. Use an alternative browser like Firefox or Opera. These browsers are safer and better security-wise.

3. Keep your AVG Antivirus program updated regularly if you wish to keep it for constant protection against viruses. I personally have other preferences: Avast or Avira. You can try them if you wish to change. They are great AVs. Please keep only one AV installed.

4. Keep and use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and update it regularly. It is a new and powerful anti-malware tool, totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.

5. Install WinPatrol, a great protection program that helps you monitor for unwanted files or applications.

6. Install SiteHound or Web of Trust (WOT). SiteHound and WOT keeps you from dangerous websites with warnings and blockings.

7. Keep all your softwares updated. Visit Secunia Software Inspector to find out if any updates required.

8. Install a third party firewall if you do not have one for additional defense against internet dangers. Built-in Windows firewall can only keep nasties from breaking in, but unable to protect against any malwares from sending information out. Some recommended firewalls are Online Armor, Outpost and PC Tools. More information on firewalls. Please keep only one FW installed.

9. Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

10. Also look up So how did I get infected in the first place? By Tony Klein.

* At the end of this clean up operation could you please tell me which anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware etc software I should regularly run and how often?

Some are recommended above. All the security softwares should be updated at least once a week. As to how often to run, there's no fixed guideline and is basically up to you. With safe computing and surfing practices, I should say once a month would be sufficient. Real time protection will cover for the rest of the time. And you may now upgrade your Spybot to the latest version too.

Step 3: I uninstalled the older Spybot and installed Spybot 1.6.2.
I ran the new Spybot and it said no threats had been identified.



Please can I bother you with a few more questions

1. Is there any way I can set up so that I am alerted if an update for Java is available?
I’ve still got the jre-6u15-windows-i586 file on my desktop. That can be deleted right?

2. What do you think of Ccleaner? Is it a worthwhile software to have? Is it worth running occasionally?

Its called SecondLife.

It does however show up on the Add or Remove Programs list as "SecondLife (remove only)".
However, whenever I try to remove it an error message comes up like this:

"An error occurred while trying to remove SecondLife (remove only). You do not have access to F:\SecondLife\unistall.exe. You can specify the new uninstall program below.

Command line for the uninstall program."

Please can you help me remove this.

Update for Java can be done automatically. Go to your Control Panel and double click on Java. Click on the Update tab and see if the Check for Updates Automatically option is checked. That file you mentioned is the installer for Java, you may delete it if you wish.

CCleaner is a cleaning program that clears up the disk space, internet history and the registry. Unless you are an advance user, I would recommend you to use the ATF Cleaner which I asked you to download earlier. It basically does the same, but without the registry cleaner. The registry should be off limits. Running it occasionally is good.

Right click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties. Make sure you are on the General tab. Your RAM will be shown here. Let me know the figure. Have a read here and here. You will need to get it from the local computer shop. Depending on the type of computer and the programs that you use it for, yes, adding RAM will increase the speed.

See here. Just look at the Resolution section, under Windows XP and also read the next paragraph only. The rest are not relevant.

I have an external DVD drive connected to the computer. This is the F drive.

SecondLife was a program that my sister-in-law downloaded when she was living with us. I think she downloaded it from the Internet. I don't have a CD for the program.

Hi Candle ,

Your computer is clean. Just one minor fix and we are done.

We need to disable Spybot S&D's Teatimer real-time protection temporarily as it will interfere with the fix.

First step:

• Right click the Spybot icon that looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol in the System Tray (lower right corner where the clock is situated).
• For version 1.6, the steps are similar to either one of the below.
• If you have version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now unchecked (unticked). The Spybot icon should now be colorless.
• If you have Version 1.4, click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident.

Second step, for either version:

• Open Spybot S&D.
• Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode.
• Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools.
• Then, also in left panel, click on Resident that shows a red/white shield.
• If your firewall raises a question, say OK.
• In the Resident protection status frame, uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active.
• OK any prompts.
• Exit Spybot S&D and reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Remember to enable it after the fix.

Remove bad HijackThis entries

• Open HijackThis.
• Make sure you have close all programs, windows and browsers.
• Click Do a system scan only and check (tick) the following entries (if still present) :
  R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
• Click Fix checked.
• Exit HijackThis when completed.

Find file/folder

• Go to Start > Run.... Copy and paste the following text into the white box:
  

  cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "SecondLife" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

• Click OK. A command prompt window will open for a while and close.
• A file called look.txt should appear on your desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

About your RAM, 256MB is a little too low for today's standard. You should consider upgrading it to at least 512MB or 1024MB.
