virtumonde.sci help please

Hi All, with the newest update spybot found virtumonde.sci and removed the one regestry entry. Paranoid as I am I went to safe mode and checked again with everything being clean. Can you please check out my hijack this log to see if it is indeed clean. I have read that it likes to hide in other places. Also, when spybot boots on start up and askes to temove temp files (115) and I agre it says that it cant because the files are in use, even when I first boot up my comp. Is that normal? Any help would be great. Thanks again.

As for your question about the temp files and SpyBot, yes that's normal when either Windows or one of your programs installed on your computer is using the temp files when the computer boots up, hence their "in use" status.

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 2: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Uninstall List
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. In the uninstall list there is an entry called oobeflagnetscape0. I contacted the company and later gateway. This program is something they run before the computer is shipped to make sure everything is installed properly. A few days later there was a fix to remove this at the gateway website and it still won't remove it. I just decided it let it be. Here are the lists. Thanks again.

Step # 1 Remove old versions of Java

Older Java versions have vulnerabilities and need to be removed.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 3 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:
Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
- Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Hi again, this infected file has to be a false positive, I'm guessing. It's spysweper 5.0 exe.
Should of got rid of it ages ago. What do you think? Comp has been working just fine with no surprizes. I'm wondering if the spybot reg entery was a false positive as well? Any case better safe than sorry. The adobe reader install went fine didn't see that picture software option just a google bar ofer. Also installed acrobat which I removed. File sharing gives me the shivers. Thanks for your help with this.

If you no longer use SpySweeper, you can uninstall it from your computer. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Spy Sweeper and Spy Sweeper Core to remove SpySweeper.

It's possible that what Spybot found was a false positive or it could have been a leftover registry entry. Do you remember the path of the registry entry and of virtumonde.sci that Spybot found? If so, post it back here.

Let's take a closer look at the file Kasperky found to make sure whether it is or isn't a false positive:

Step # 1 Upload Files

Go to Jotti
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:\sspsetup1_.exe
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

If Jotti is busy, Go to VirusTotal and scan the file(s) there.

Spybot made an archive zip backup of it do you want to see that? Is it safe?
If I remember it said something about internet explorer. I'm not at that particular computer till tonight hopefully you can have an answer before I send you the results of the spybot exe. Which is just and old copy that I should of tossed because they are at 6.0 now

Is there a .txt file (or another word-document type extension) in the .zip file. If there is you can post the contents of it here in your next post. If not, that's ok. If it was something bad, more likely than not either MalwareBytes or Kaspersky would have picked up on it more.

Let's see what the scan results from that spysweeper file tell us.

Based on the results of the scan, I'd like for you to run another tool that will help get rid of anything that's malicious on your computer and help me determine if there is more to get rid of.

First, delete the C:\sspsetup1_.exe file.

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include C:\ComboFix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next reply.

Before I download combofix I was loking for that .txt file for you to look at in the recovery folder for spybot and it turns out that it isn't a .txt file after all.

In any case I use this computer a lot for freelance and took some time to read the install info for combofix on the beeping computer web site. Also I took some time to read some other forum posts. It says that at boot up I will get a prompt to reboot in that recovery console to fix any issues that combofix needs to change. Is that permanant or can I disable that? Also it says that I need to turn off any anti-virus, spyware detector and firewalls for the process to run properly. Well I not too sure I want to disable my firewall when it needs to download that file from microsoft. Also does combofix fix what it can and notify what it cant? I also noticed that it removed orphan regestry files, did I read that right? Am I being paranoid?

I know you are trying to help me and everything has been smooth. The point is with the warnings that appear that nobody would be responsable if something happens is ok it's just that like I said at the begining of the post I have freelance work right now and it would not be good if somehow something happened. Is there a backup I can do before I apply combofix?

Sorry for the long post. I know you are making doubbly sure my system is clean, I just get bad luck at the wrong time....a lot. Any reasurance or advice would be great.

I can have you remove Recovery Console near the end of the fix, but it would be best to keep it on your computer incase you ever need it. If you get infected again and something happens to your computer and you can't boot into normally, a helper could have you use Recovery Console to help fix your computer or get it to where you can at least boot into Normal mode and continue from there. And you cannot boot directly into Recovery Console, when you have it installed and you turn your computer on a choice will appear of whether to boot into Recovery Console or boot into normal Windows. The choice will be up for 2-3 seconds and should default to Windows everytime.

Also it says that I need to turn off any anti-virus, spyware detector and firewalls for the process to run properly. Well I not too sure I want to disable my firewall when it needs to download that file from microsoft.

ComboFix just needs an active Internet connection to download and install Recovery Console, it doesn't need one to run. If you want, I can show you another way to download and install the Recovery Console. Let me know if you want to do it that way.

Also, ComboFix will run with Anti-Virus, spyware detectors, and firewalls running. Its just they may interfere with ComboFix when its running so its best to disable them. Since ComboFix doesn't require an active Internet connection to run, you can disconnect your computer from the Internet, disable your protection tools, then run ComboFix. Once its done, you can turn everything back on and then reconnect to the Net.

Yes, ComboFix will list out what it has deleted and will list out files, folders, and registry entries for me to look over to see if I need you to delete them. Yes, ComboFix removes orphaned registry entries. This is perfectly safe, no harm comes to your computer when these are removed.

Is there a backup I can do before I apply combofix?

If you want to do a backup before running ComboFix, the best way to do that would be to either burn files/folders you want to backup to a CD/DVD-ROM disc or transfer them to a Flash drive/USB Stick.

sorry for all the questions I cant afford to miss time not working but I also want to get this straightend out. I ran adaware and it found 2 regestry files and something in my doc. folder. That was a first, also I did an update of spybot this morning and there were 2 updates from 10-22. I know I had checked for updates everyday since I first got this virtumonde issue so even though I'm a lil' nervous "not wanting to see what it finds" I'll do it tonight. Can you give me directios on how to download that recovery console prior? Also I'm guessing I can do a system restore if anything gets goofy. Thanks for your patience.

Yes, you can do a System Restore if need be.

Downloading and installing Recovery Console instructions:

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
At the next prompt, click 'No'.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Let me see that report in your next post.
