Virtumonde Trojans - Newbie Need Help!

Hello,

This log is from a friend's computer. I installed spybotsd 1.6.0.30. I ran it in safemode and it found 15 virtumonde trojans. Spybot could not remove all of them, so I ran spybot 3 times and it could not remove them. Please help, I was not able to find information in the forums because they look like the information is tailored to the specific instance.

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

  1. Click here to visit Java's website.
  2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Click on Download.
  3. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  4. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  5. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  6. Click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  7. Double click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
  8. After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  9. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  10. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  11. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  12. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs

  13. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  14. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  15. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....

There are no visible infections in logs so it should be pretty safe to connect it. You can disconnect it after scan again.

When trying to install Kaspersky it says : Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program. What do I do?
 
Which browser you use?

McAfee

The McAfee was only a trial and was not used. I will have him use SB S&D and AdAware. Are the combination of the two not good coverage? Did I mess up what we were doing?
 
No, he needs to install an antivirus.

SB S&D and AdAware are not antiviruses; they are antispyware programs.

Install one the free antiviruses from below and post back a fresh log afterwards, please.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.
