Virtumonde, Win32, etc.

Hi

If the system is running without problems now then it's time for final steps. :santa:

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type "c:\documents and settings\Rho\My Documents\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :santa:

Oh my god. I don't think I'm ready. Okay. There are a few of outstanding things that I am worried about, given your mentioning of "administrator access" and the other instructions:

1. I don't really understand this whole thing of Administrator access. I inherited the computer, it shows two users that I can see when I re-boot: WAL and RHO. I vaguely remember WAL having administrator access in the past and my trying to remove it. I don't remember how I sought to do this or whether I was successful. So I don't know if I have Administrator access.

2. When I boot up in SAFE mode the only two users are Rho and Administrator. However, Safe Mode will not let me log on and do things as Administrator. Shortly after logging on in Safe mode as the Administrator, the computer just turns off. In contrast, I can log on in Safe mode as Rho. It seems almost as if there is some program that does not want me to work as Administrator in Safe Mode, so it shuts the computer off.

3. You had mentioned a "default user" in a previous post (suggesting I get rid of it I think). I can't find who/what the default user is. In c:\documents and settings I see the following folders: Administrator, all users, WAL, RHO, and Wal.YOUR-0CDC4F5844. If I right click on documents and settings and search for "default" then a folder (that is light in color, not the same color as other folders) shows up that says "Default User").

4. Before I found this site, I decided to try to get rid of internet explorer. The virus kept trying to launch it and I (stupidly) thought that removing internet explorer could be a fix. I used add/remove programs and I tried to delete some of the files that I could find. It seems that internet explorer is necessary for the proper functioning of the computer in some way and actually that I did not really, truly remove it. But I don't know if I have disabled or interfered with its proper operation it in some way. I don't know if I have to fix something or re-download Internet Explorer to follow your steps to make i.e. safer to use. (I do remember that downloading IE7 gave me a lot of trouble ...)

5. By the way, about updating. Your right. I never did it -- on purpose. It made me mad that updates of some programs made them worse from my perspective. So, if I had a version of AIM or iTunes, the update was something the creators wanted that I as a user did not. It made it more complicated or changed a feature or added automatic stuff that I didn't want but don't know how to control (like launching a firefox window or launching when you re-start). I also worried that I couldn't be "sure" that it was a real update. I thought it was possible the message was some kind of trick, dressed up as proper program update, trying to get me to download something that was malicious. So my policy was never update anything. I had no idea I was exposing myself to this kind of risk. I will alway, always update from now on.

1. Since you were able to do all this fixing you have to have an administrator access.

2. I don't think there's any program doing that. It might be good to create a new user account with admin rights and then delete old accounts ( Microsoft's instructions).

3. That was just an example name. Doesn't mean any of user names on your system would have to be named as 'Default user'.

4. You can only see that by trying. Your log says that there isn't Internet Explorer 7 installed there in your system.

5. Vulnerable versions of some popular programs like Java and Adobe Reader are good targets for bad guys. It's strongly recommended to keep these up-to-date if any version is installed in the system.

Hi --

I re-did the system restore, but I'm having trouble removing the Combo Fix.

I blocked and copied exactly what I put in the run box:

c:\documents and settings\Rho\My Documents\Desktop\ComboFix.exe/u

I get the error message:

Windows cannot find 'c:\documents.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search.

It occurred to me that maybe I was supposed to have quotation marks around

"c:\documents and settings\Rho\My Documents\Desktop\ComboFix.exe"/u

But when I do that, I also get the error message.

Sorry, what am I doing wrong?

There has to be space left before /u. So, the command should be:
"c:\documents and settings\Rho\My Documents\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u

Hi --

Okay I was able to remove combofix. However, when I checked the windows security website, it said it needed a newer version of IE (I was looking at it from firefox). I dowloaded IE7 and it asked me to reboot. As it was rebootiing, I noticed an error message. I have seen it before, but it flashed relatively quickly, so I couldn't capture it. It was something like unable to initialize something. It has the letter hp or hq, and several 000. I can't remember if there was an "exe" at the end. I tried re-booting again to see if it would repeat, but it didn't. If it comes up again, I'll post.

Under IE7, i noticed that the security setting is "medium high" instead of "high." Should it be turned to high? I also noticed the following settings that you didn't mention:

Run components not signed with Authenticode "enable"
Under Downloads:
automatic promppting for downloads is disabled
File download is enabled

Should I now re-set the tea-timer thing (I don't remember how)

Hi

That error message may not have anything to do with IE.

Under IE7, i noticed that the security setting is "medium high" instead of "high." Should it be turned to high?
No. Just follow the instructions I posted.

I also noticed the following settings that you didn't mention:
Those are ok by default so that's why I didn't mention them.

Should I now re-set the tea-timer thing (I don't remember how)
Instructions for that are in post #2 of this thread. To enable TeaTimer you have to reverse the action. Make sure that you have resetted TeaTimer with the resetteatimer.bat file first

Hi --

I re-enabled Tea Timer. After re-booting, I ran Spy Bot. It came up with Smitfraud-C. In post 14, you had mentioned:

"We'll get rid of quarantined and system restore items a bit later."

I remember doing something with system restore, but other than the specific instructions in post 14, I don't remember more about quarantined items. Is this why Smithfraud-C came up?

I checked fix the malware then exited the program. I then re-booted. As I re-booted, the error message flashed again. I wasn't ready for it because I had rebooted a couple of time. The only letters I caught were

hpqgc01 and there was an exe extention.

As the spot is running, along the bottom there is a running count of files. I noticed various names of stuff after the colon.

Running bot-check (134411/346395:Virtumonde.dll)

eros paradise
hacker
tangodialer
teenxxx
coolwwwsearch
smartkeylogger
deepdive
fakealert.mhg
fraudxpantivirus
pornbho.ru
spylockedfakealert
win32keymake
6222534
smitfraud
spyarsenal
fakemsnbeta
win32agent

It runs pretty quickly, but those were some of the things I was able to catch. After re-booting, I re-ran spybot, and this time it came back clean.

Does any of this mean anything? Are there quarantined items that I should still get rid of? When the computer got gripped with the virus, I did get error messages from my symantec saying it couldn't send outlook e-mails to various names with an .ru extension (I have outlook, but i don't use it). This all makes me really nervous.

Hi

Smitfraud thing probably came up cos you re-enabled TeaTimer and it wasn't probably resetted before enabling bringing back the entries we fixed.

Email sending thing was most likely due to infection. If you want post your hjt log I can take one more look to it.

Okay, thanks. After sending my message, I ran a search for "quarantine" in documents and settings and this is what I got:

c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\Stopzilla!

c:\documents and settings\Rho\application data\Lavasoft\Ad-aware

c:\documents and settings\Wal.YOUR-OCDC454844\application data\PC Tools\Spyware Doctor

c:\documents and settings\All Users\application data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5

c:\documents and settings\Rho\application data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Quarantine

Here is the log.

Thank you so much for your help. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't come across this site . . .

Is it okay for me to delete those quarantined files that I mentioned in post 50? Also, the error message when I am turning off the computer still come up sometimes. It's hard to capture it, but it says something like:

The instruction at ox774fdf0b referenced memory at ox000000. the memory could not be read.

Is this message innocuous?

Thanks again for everything that you have done.

You're welcome :santa:

I'd leave those alone since those won't cause you any harm.

Nothing malware related. I'd say it's either some software on your computer or memory (hardware) problem. You may post to a forum dealing with general pc problems. For example, http://forums.pcpitstop.com is that kind of forum.

Hi -- Thank a lot.

Could you tell me what I had? I know there were viruses, but do you know the kinds of things they were designed to do?
