Things are looking good, but let's run one online scan to be sure

1 - F-Secure Online Scan

  1. Please go to F-Secure website to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
  2. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
  3. Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  4. Click on Custom Scan.
    • Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
    • Under Other Scan Options, select these options:
      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics
  5. Click Start.
  6. It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
  7. Click on I want decide item by item.
  8. Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click on Show Report.
  11. Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
  12. Click Finish.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check

I'm still getting that error message when I try to run F-Secure Online: "An error has occured. Please close the scanner and your browser, then try again (Id:12)"

Is there something else I should run instead?

try this:

  1. Click here to perform a Panda online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it requires ActiveX.
  2. Click on Scan your PC now.
  3. A new window will open.
  4. Select your country and type in your email address. You may also optionally choose to receive emails from Panda. If you don't wish to, please select I do not want to receive marketing information from Panda Software and/or its International Representatives where applicable. option.
  5. Click on Free online scan.
  6. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX. Please allow it.
  7. Once installed, it will start downloading the virus definitions. Please be patient. This takes a while.
  8. Once the files are downloaded, it will ask you to select what to scan. Select My Computer.
  9. The scan will start. It takes a while, please be patient.
  10. Once done, click on View Report.
  11. You will be brought to another page. Click on Save Report. Save it to your desktop. Please post this report in your next reply.

It seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

I do have a spyware/antivirus program - Spy Doctor with Anti Virus. You asked me to shut it off in previous steps by right clicking on the icon in the tray and choosing shutdown but the program does not automatically start up again when I reboot. I asked in post #20 if I should turn it back on, but didn't get a reply and I didn't want to turn it on and scan anything until you gave me the okay.

I will go ahead and turn it back on. Does this mean we need to start over again?

I updated my anti-virus program and scanned. It found 6 infections, but I will hold off cleaning them until I get the okay from you. I don't want to mess up anything if that isn't the correct action to take. Thank you.
 
Phew! Glad we don't have to start over...I was so afraid I messed something up.

I can't see any way to produce a log with Spyware Doctor. Most of the threats/infections were listed as cookies/adware. Everything was marked as a "low level" threat, but I'll list everything other than the cookies/adware here:

Hijacker.Affiliated_with_Browser_Hijackers
This one was found in 6 cookies for registrydefender.com

Application.NirCmd
Found in 29 places (Registry Values/Registry Key), but they all seem to have catchme in the lines. One other was listed as found in Combofix.

Trojan.Generic
Found 1 time.
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-845420126-288289099-2865202534-1006\Software\Wget

Should I run a fix? If not, would you like me to scan with something else so that I can produce a proper log for you?

Cookies are not dangerous so there should not be any worries

The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :)

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Delete RSIT from your desktop, also delete this folder C:\rsit.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
