A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.
  1. Please download LSPFix from here.
  2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
  3. Check the I know what I''m doing box.
  4. In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of ntdll64.dll.
  5. Select every instance of ntdll64.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
  6. When you are done click Finish>>.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, please.

There were no instances of that file in the keep box but one already in the remove box. I hope that is okay. Here is the HJT log:

Still problems?

Memory use is back to normal, the computer is not slow, and I have control over the desktop again. I turned on TeaTimer to see if I would get a bunch of pop-up bubbles again--none came. I can connect to the Internet without a bunch of messages saying some files failed to load and (so far) there have been no random blank Internet Explorer pop-ups. I can change system settings like the sound scheme back to how they were. The computer seems to be running well. Thank you so much. I have not tried rebooting to see if it is still slow to start and still gives messages about files that failed to load. Also, yesterday it started sometimes failing while booting (Windows would shut down and go to a blue screen with an error message), so hopefully that will stop, but I don't know yet. Other than that I don't know how else to make sure it is working properly.

Thank you so much for your help!

The first reboot still failed. It got to my desktop for a second then went to a blue screen with a message. It told me to check new software/hardware. The message came with this information:

Stop: 0X00000022 (0X0002030B, 0X8A5CC5A0, 0X8A5CC4E8, 0X8A664008)

I don't know if that means anything to you and could be related to the bugs at hand, but I would definitely appreciate any thoughts you have.

Also, are people from Finland called Fins?

That error message is likely related to hardware.

Have you added any new hardware lately?

I started using a USB flash drive and an SD card to do this fixes we just went through so that I would not have to connect to the internet. But those are pretty tame for hardware, I think.

Have those been connected when you have booted computer?

If so, that might explain it.

No, they have not. Oh, well. I don't want to burden you with this in a malware removal forum. I really appreciate your help getting my computer back from the throws of the trojans.

Great :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don''t have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
3) PC Tools
4) Sunbelt/Kerio
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

There may actually still be a problem. I cannot turn Automatic Updates on. I also cannot turn on the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. I also was not able to update the definitions files for Ad-Aware.

I am able to update Symantec Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes, SpywareBlaster, and the PCTools firewall. Not being able to update Windows, however, is a problem.

I have already tried that. I know that disabling automatic updates is one of the effects of at least one of the infections I had on here, so I am nervous that some remnant of the malware is still there. Actually, Spybot is picking up Fraud.XPAntivirus and Right Media.
