Virus/Spyware - Internet Explorer

Hi guys,

Several days ago i was infected with something either a virus or spyware. I have attempted to clean this up using various programs (spybot etc). These programs all come up clean, along with Norton AntiVirus. However i suspect that it is not the case as im still getting...

- Popups (WinAntiVirus Pro, and various others)
- Internet explorer is not working correctly (Tabs no longer work, and very slow)
- Computer is booting and running slowly.

I have completed all the steps in the preliminary steps posted here

Can someone please help me to fix this problem.

Hi Jeff and welcome to the forum. Looks like you already unhid the Vundo trojan, let's try to rid you of it first.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.


Since Panda won't remove this for you unless you purchase: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tools\Restart.exe
Why don't you have a look at it with these tools:

To make sure Panda is not giving a false positive, we may have to remove this item manually, post the results for me to view.

Thanks Jeff for returning your information, let's talk about this item first:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tools\Restart.exe as you could see, most of the scans can find nothing wrong with it. One valuable tool, SmitfraudFix, contains a pup (potentially unwanted program) called process.exe. The fix can't remove Smitfraud without it but most AV's say it is bad. What you have here is a put (lol) potentially unwanted tool. I will have to let you decide if you want it or not, but I will give you the google on it:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a last HJT log, let me know how things are running.

Hi Phil,

I have followed your instructions and checked all the items, removed them and run ATF Cleaner and restarted.

Internet explorer is running well tabs are working etc...

I did my best to explain, I do not think there is anything wrong with it and it is probably part of a tweak you applied. You will have to remove it or leave it as you see fit.

These two lines are clutter, and for some reason still there:

Some spyware programs will block the changes, but I don't see any, and will be suggesting that. Try HJT again on them, perhaps in safe mode.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Thanks alot Phil computer seems to be back to its normal self. Your assistance is much appreciated. How would i go about removing restore.exe?

If it was me, I would make sure no files or folders are hidden then I would navigate to that Tools folder and right click then choose properties. I would want to know what else is in there and who put it there. Chances are if I don't need Restart.exe, I don't need the folder or the stuff in the folder where it is residing. This is something I would decide after I collected information, perhaps scanned with online scanners.
To be sure, I would then delete that folder and Restart.exe along with it. It would go to the recycle bin (make sure it has not been bypassed) and I would let it set there for a few days while I watched to see how the computer ran without it. Once I was sure I did need it, then I would dump it from the bin. I do tend to be over cautious though. If you have any trouble deleting it, do it in safe mode.
