Wifes Laptop infected with Themonitor, Project1, and lord knows what else

That is true, though sometimes it is junk left in the registry that has had everything else removed. As such it can cause no problems. I good cleaning of the registry may be needed. I suggest CCleaner for the job:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ A good program that I use on all of my computers. If you use it, the registry cleaner is called "Issues", you must back up when prompted to be safe as you should always do when working in the registry. I also suggest you should be sure you are running the newest version of Spybot with the most current updates.
