I have been having issues with my Avast virus scan continually showing I have the above-referenced dialer. I've been working with cnet forums on trying to resolve this and it appears there's a strong possibility this is a false positive. However, when trying to find out anything at the avast forum, they tell me that my hijack this log has 3 redirects and I need to see you about that. I've run scan after scan suggested by both Avast forum and cnet and everything comes up clean. I've been an avid user of Spybot for a long time and it continually congratulates. I keep the program updated and run every few days. Just this morning it congratulated me. Below is my hjt log and wonder if you could help me out on what Avast is telling me in regard to checking with you. I feel like I'm going in circles, but if this is truly not an FP, I'd love to get it off my PC. I've already done MBAM and SUPERAntispyware scans numerous time -- full scans; I use and keep updated Lavasoft Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster. I also have a pay version of Kerio Personal Firewall. I do not understand what Avast means about the redirects and if there is something I should do.

Thank you.

Hi jzbell

Those redirects are set by manufacturer.

Let's do some further research:

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Win 32 dialer

Ok, I have the information; however, I have no clue about how to copy and paste to send to you. I can find no report area in the Avast program. However, I have print screened everything I could from the "Results of last scan" pages and will type below. Believe me, this saga keeps getting worse -- I'm honestly beginning to think that Avast Antivirus is not for our computer. I used AVG for 10 years at least and never had a problem until they came out with their latest and greatest which is when I switched to Avast. Until recently I had no problems there. What seems odd to me is that I've been to Avast, cnet, and now here (forums) for help and advice has been provided re: the running of many different scans, which I've done over and over and NOTHING is showing up anywhere except when I run the Avast virus scan. Cnet felt after 50 some posts there that it's got to be a false positive. It just bothers me that it keeps appearing and now there are even more listings for the same thing. I'll post below that information from the Avast. By the way, I've run AntiSpyware; Kapersky; F-Secure; MBAM and they've all shown me clean except for cnet's cookie which I deleted during the scans. Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, both show me clean. I also use Spyware Blaster and CCleaner. I run CCleaner EVERY time I come off the internet, which is often. Anyway --

Cnet recommended getting SUPERAntispyware and running which it also showed me clean. They recommended I keep and use on a regular basis. Now it too is showing up in the Avast scan. I'm beginning to think what is with Avast ? ?? Maybe I should be thinking about another antivirus program. I've used the free ones in the past and have had good luck with them. AVG was great until the latest and greatest program and it really bogged down our PC.

I forgot to post what it says about the things found by Avast when trying to move to the chest. It says -- Error occurred during moving file to chest; program doesn't support this type of archive.

Also, re: the games APPS finds --- I read at the Avast forum to leave well enough alone (this was someone else's post). Those have appeared in my scans since day 1 with Avast.

Shaba -- I followed your recommendation and removed the Java items you mentioned. That left 2 Java entries on my PC which are:

Java (TM) 6 Update 7

Java (TM) SERuntime Eivornment 6 Update 1

Are both are of those ok to have remaining?

Thanks

Yes --

By the way, avast posted me this morning saying that you are one of the best!

The information below is how I knew it's a dialer --- this is shown on the avast info screen -- the date and version # changes according to the date. It's almost like I get a new one whenever a new restore point is set or reboot or something like that. The date and version don't remain the same.

WIN32:Dialer-gen[Trj] VPS Version 081009-0,10/9/2008

I have not yet run an avast scan this morning to see what shows up. I have run a Spybot scan however, and it congratulated me.

These are .msi (microsoft installer files) in system restore.

The one in D: drive are in recovery partition and manufacturer default files.

So it really looks like a false positive to me.

Does avast! ever find them outside C:\System Volume Information ?

No just there.

I'll be gone a few hours and will check back this p.m.

Thanks again for ALL of your help. I appreciate you immensely.

Then I recommend that you do this:

Disable and Enable System Restore like instructed below. Then create a new restore point and let me know if it helped.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

OK, I've followed your suggestion re: the restore thing. I also ran another Avast scan and sameo, sameo! Here's what it found + a new one (top line):

C:System Volume Information/_restore {2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E 48210}\RP3\A0000184.msi\ISSetupFile.SetupFile33

C:System Volume Information/_restore {2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E 48210}\RP3\A0000136.msi\ISSetupFile.SetupFile33
C:WINDOWS\Installer\f78b92.msi\ISSetupFile.SetupFile33

NOTE: The first one listed above is a new one. I don't know if it is because a new restore point was set or if it's just because I ran Avast again or what.

I did checkout how many restore points there were before doing the disable/enable and found this: Only 2 checkpoints were shown -- one on 10/9 and the one I manually created on 10/10. All other restore points before 10/9 were gone because cnet had me do what you did and it wiped them off. Now I'm starting over again.

Avast is still showing their stuff when I do a scan. Would it be worthwhile for me to get another Antivirus program. I used AVG for years with no problems until their latest and greatest version. What about unload the present Avast and maybe downloading another Avast -- but I'm guessing I would have the same problems as I do now, because Avast sure is not accepting the idea that this may be an FP.

For the record: I use Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware; Spyware Blaster, pay version of Kerio personal firewall; CCleaner; and Avast. I keep them updated and run often. I run CCleaner every time I come off the internet, and then some. I'm a clean freak and have that reputation where I help teach PC classes in our local computer club.

I'd appreciate your suggestions -- maybe it's time to go to a pay version of antivirus/antispyware protection -- but I definitely don't like Norton or McAfee.

Those items shouldn't be there if system restore has been disabled, rebooted and re-enabled afterwards.

Are you sure that you did that?

Win32

I sure did. This same thing (they didn't go away) happened when cnet had me do the disable/enable task. I've no more restore points either.

That sounds then very strange.

If you like to go back to AVG, I understand it.

I can however suggest some paid antivirus/firewall packages as well if you like to.
