Thanks Phil,

I did follow the System Restore instructions you gave me as soon as I got them, I will re-do them. As I can't find an Avast log that I can send you, I might run Kaspersky. But I will have to do it tomorrow as I feel unwell.

Bye and thanks again
Kerry

Thanks for the feedback Kerry and I am sorry you are not feeling well:sad:
If the computer is running as it should, use the information I posted from experts to help you keep it that way, and there is no need to post again unless there is a problem. I'll close this topic in a couple of days.

Safe surfing and Happy Holidays:santa:

Hi Phil

Thanks so much for all the help you have given me,,,and the added information and advice. Just to clarify....do you think that the viruses in the operating memory and the rootkit hidden files that Avast keeps alerting me to are nothing to worry about?

If that is the case I will sign off and thank you again with all my heart for your most generous effort.

Kerry

I can only comment on Avast if you scan and post the scan results so I can view them. If you wish to scan with Kaspersky Online Scan, here are the instructions:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Hi Phil,
I am sorry that this seems to be just rediculous at times...but now I cannont download the Kaspersky online scanner. I have tried a number of times and I have turned off Avast as they recommend but after I accept the terms and conditions I always get the message....

Starting Java applet has failed!Please go online to use this program.

Of course I am already online...so I don't know what it means.

I just want to make sure it's right.....so thanks again

Kerry

See if you can get Trend Micro™ HouseCall to run:

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Let me know if TMHC finds anything and what it finds.

Thanks
