WinAntiVirus PRO, SysProtect Inc & System Pop Ups...

Hi, this is my first post - and my last resort! As well as the above popups, my pc also loses the desktop icons and taskbar periodically (safe mode will not display icons and taskbar at all - I have to run stuff through Task Manager). In addition, web pages sometimes redirect to expedia or adult friend finder...

In safe mode, I did a complete system scan with norton and found nothing. I also did an adaware scan and found 46 tracking cookies. Then I found your site and have done a panda scan online - report below. Then in safe mode, I scanned using Spybot S&D and fixed all the red ones. 2 out of 19 could not be fixed. Then I did HiJackThis - log below panda one. Any help GREATLY appreciated :blush:

Hello Kate, and welcome to the forum. I must apologize, there are many logs and few volunteers and it appears this one was missed.

If you still need help and are not being helped elsewhere, this is what I would like you to do. These hackers have figured a way to hide their garbage from HJT. What I would like you to do is return here:
C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\HijackThis.exe and rename it HJT.exe then scan and post a new log, I think we will see the bad stuff that was hiding then.

Thanks for the reply, your help is much appreciated as I can see how busy you all are.

Since my initial post, I did a complete scan with adaware, norton and spybot on safe mode. Norton deleted a virus and quarantined 3 more. Adaware just found tracking cookies and spybot found mainly tracking cookies. When I restarted I got am adult friend finder pop up straight away.

Hi Kate, look at the 02's and the 020's, that is the junk they were hiding. Vundo trojan, and who knows what else. We will go after the Vundo trojan first, this may take a while. They are also morphing the CLSID numbers and Atribune who created the fix is constantly adding to keep up with the hackers.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

I would like to edit in this information, this item:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe
If you do not know what it is, then use one or more of these free online scanners and post the results. I think it is bad, and it we will need to know.

Kate, this is going to be hard I fear, the VundoFix killed one of the infections, but there is another:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtuurss.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtuurss - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtuurss.dll
and we are still talking about the Vundo trojan here, there are still other trojans that are not Vundo. Since it appears this item is not being removed by Atribune's fix, he has made a way that we can add the file and perhaps that will rid you of it.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files
Copy & paste the entrie below into the top 2 boxes:

Click Add Files and click Close Window.

At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later.
Here are the files, and you can enter them all before rebooting:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wincqt32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjvd32.dll

Thanks Kate, we are making prograss. I see those rmass.exe files, look until you find them, since they are in running processes we will see if we can stop them (there is only one file) and delete it manually. According to one of our experts, the update.exe is what was putting the vundo back, we will start by running vundo again, we may have to add that file later, we will see. Here is what we will try.

1) of course you don't need to download again if you still have the tool.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

(hold the logs until we are finished)

2) We will use the Process Manager in HJT like this:

How to use the Process Manager

HijackThis has a built in process manager that can be used to end processes as well as see what DLLs are loaded in that process. To access the process manager, you should click on the Config button and then click on the Misc Tools button. You should now see a new screen with one of the buttons being Open Process Manager. If you click on that button you will see a new screen similar to Figure 8 below.
This window will list all open processes running on your machine. You can then click once on a process to select it, and then click on the Kill Process button designated by the red box in Figure 8 above. This will attempt to end the process running on the computer.

If you would like to terminate multiple processes at the same time, press and hold down the control key on your keyboard. While that key is pressed, click once on each process that you want to be terminated. As long as you hold down the control button while selecting the additional processes, you will be able to select multiple processes at one time. When you have selected all the processes you would like to terminate you would then press the Kill Process button.

If you would like to see what DLLs are loaded in a selected process, you can put a checkmark in the box labeled Show DLLs, designated by the blue box in the figure above. This will split the process screen into two sections. The first section will list the processes like before, but now when you click on a particular process, the bottom section will list the DLLs loaded in that process.

To exit the process manager you need to click on the back button twice which will place you at the main screen.

Look for C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe and end process on it. If it is running twice, stop it twice. When it is not running we can delete it.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I have tried to stop this process in Windows Task Manager before but, as there are 2 occurrences, it reopens itself as I close the other one and will not delete.

Do I need to continue Step 5 onwards? Or did that depend on being able to kill the process in Step 2?

Yes please, but now since you stopped, let's try to add that Vundo line to the tool again to see what happens.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files
Copy & paste the entrie below into the top 2 boxes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mljjg.dll <<< must be exact

Click Add Files and click Close Window.

Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log.

Then continue at #5 to the end of the instructions. Let me know if you have problems deleting C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe. If it is running we may have to delete it in safe mode. Post C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log

Are you using this computer at work? If so, I still must encourage you to keep it offline except when you are troubleshooting, until we identify and remove these last couple of items, you can easily get infected because of them.

I can report that it looks like the vundo is gone:bigthumb: you may rename HJT to HijackThis.exe if you wish.

Here are our items and this is the first time I have seen either of them.

Before we kill them, would it be possible for you to send copies where they can be looked at to find out how to defeat them? Here are the directions:
I need to get samples of some of your files. Please create a folder called c:\submit. Now copy the following files into that directory:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL

To copy the files simply navigate to the directory they are in and right click on the file name, and then click on copy option. Now go back to the c:\submit folder and right click in the folder and select the paste option.

Once the files are all copied zip the folder and rename submit.zip to yourmembername.zip (for example grinler.zip). If you are using XP or ME right-click on the folder and click on the Send To option and then send it to a Compressed folder. You will now see a file called yourmembername.zip. If you are using another version of Windows, please download a program called Winzip and zip it using that.

When the files are zipped, go to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browsing to the file you are submitting Finally click on the Send File button.

If you have any problems, do not worry about it______________________________________________

Let's give Killbox a try to remove them. Download Killbox and the tutorial for it's use from this link:

Since there are only two files, delete them one at a time please. Try the removal in the order they are posted in the tutorial. Once you restart and check the HJT log and they are gone, then post a log for me.

Tried using killbox to remove but both files wouldn't be removed. Tried removing on reboot. rmass still showing twice on Task Manager tho...

Open that temp folder and delete all of the contents, if it won't let you, boot to safe mode and do it from there.

I have another tool called Avenger we can use, but the screen shots of the files have me worried.

Both files have been on the computer since 10 October 2005. I suggest you investigate these files more, get opinions from all of the online scanners:

and get an IT person involved if there is one. If they have been there that long, we want to be sure we are not removing something needed by the computer.

We removed all of the vundo infections, what symptoms are you having now?
Get your Java program updated: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\ <<<
that is probably where you got the vundo to start with, see this:
