WinAntiVirus PRO, SysProtect Inc & System Pop Ups...

Emptied temp folder.

Scanned recover32 -
Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.apd
Panda 9.0.0.4 07.31.2006 Adware/SuperSpider
Kaspersky 4.0.2.24 07.31.2006 Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.apd

This is my home pc.... now if the rmass and recover32 files both appeared on my pc at the same time, am I right to assume that they are both the result of the same infection / intrusion? Also, if they belonged there, wouldn't they be flipping easier to remove???!!!

OK as for symptoms, they have reduced somewhat over the past few days - definitely a marked improvement. Still getting adult friend finder and party poker popups. Cant remember the last time I had a systems message popup or a winantivirus one....

Formatting is a possibility - got 80 or 90 gb to back up first though not to mention the hassle so would rather not have to if possible....

OK, since it is your computer, give me a little while and I will post instructions for using Avenger to see if it can remove it. I was nervous thinking it might be a work computer. That stuff has been there a long time. Once/if we can get it, then we will know if that was causing the issues you are having.

There is a similiar issue being worked here:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=81347
if you want to see what they are doing with it. I'll post the Avenger instructions shortly.

Thanks

Download The Avenger: (Edited out to keep it out of untrained hands) , and save it to your Desktop. Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
Check the 'Input script manually' box.
Click on the magnifying glass icon.
Copy everything in the code box below (don't copy the word "CODE" in the box header, just the box contents starting at Files to delete) and paste it in the box that opens:

RED >>> WARNING: This script is not a general fix. If you are not this user, running this script could damage your system

Code:
CODE
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL

Now click the 'Done' button.
Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it manually.

Please post a new HijackThis log and the log file from Avenger at C:\avenger.txt

Thanks

Hello again!

OK symptoms:

The adult friend finder pop ups are back.
The desktop and start menu keep going AWOL.
Every now and then I get an alert from Zone Alarm telling me that idd17.tmp.exe file is trying to access the trusted zone.
Every now and then I hear the pcs dialup modem clicking (I use cable broadband) and when I go into tools on IE and look at connections, it says there is a dial up connection called ENTER. I remove it but it comes back. Usually after I do this, I check on Task Manager and the idd17.tmp.exe file is running which i stop. I think it is to do with rmass as when I look at the log on Zone Alarm that is constantly trying to do stuff.

Anywho - here is the HJT log. Thanks!

Hi Kate, You have a load of infection you did not have before. This computer has to be picking up this junk online. You will need to stay offline until we clean it completely. If periods of time are going to pass before you can troubleshoot, the computer should be turned off during those times with no one using it.

Some additional information is out now about this one:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe Which is still in the log twice, I'll let you read it:
http://fileinfo.prevx.com/spyware/qq78f829590159-RMAS19277526/RMASS.EXE.html
According to the website, they will remove it free the first time and we may have to use it, we will see.
New Users: You can download the full Prevx1 product and use it to cleanup and remove RMASS.EXE and other infections free of charge, then leave it to monitor your PC for other infections
I have not used their services before.

Thanks to Atribune and any other who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was been found, close the alert window and right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select “Add More Files?” from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\BADFILE.dll
  • Copy and paste next in the second field: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ELIFDAB.*
  • Click the “Add Files” button.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • A log will be created, C:\vundofix.txt which you will need to include in your next reply.

Hold that log until we complete the instructions.

You know where the Task Manager is, end task on C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe (both instances) and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\idd17.tmp.exe (if it is showing)

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

(you should still have this)
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

If you can't delete these files, I need to know. I want you to then try the delete on reboot tool in HJT. I will post instructions below. I need to know what happens with each item.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssqpq.dll <<< file (should not exist after vundofix is run)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winxtx32.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\idd17.tmp.exe [/COLOR]<<< delete the entire contents of the TEMP folder. ( few files may not go but they will be old and valid)

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer, if any of those files are left, then try this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later.

Post a new HJT log with feedback as requested. Post any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Hiya,

Its very frustrating as I have anti virus and a fire wall and am very cautious as far as security goes!

Just followed your instructions and it didnt work as planned....

Ran Vundofix and it didnt find any files so I copied and pasted the files in and clicked add file(s) then close window. The files didnt get added so the program said there was nothing to fix. So I reopened the proggy and tried again. However hard I tried, it wouldn't let me add the files.

Here is the log:

VundoFix V5.1.5

Running as SYSTEM
from c:\windows\system32\VundoFix.exe

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.4

Java version is 1.5.0.7

Scan started at 20:55:02 19/08/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

Went to task manager and tried to stop rmass. Its impossible - as soon as you stop one it restarts immediately so there is always one running. I tried it last time and nothing seems to stop it.

The tmp file had gone - they reappear periodically with different names and I stop them (just deleted idd7 - again it appeared straight after a zone alarm alert).

All of my files are visible.

Checked all and pressed fix on HJT. Then explored and tried to delete them. Unable to delete any of them.

Tried to delete the Temp folder. All deleted except gymspzd.dll and tmp54.tmp.

Ran ATF cleaner.

Largely unsuccessful attempting to delete on reboot.

The gymspzd.dll file always stays in the Temp folder but is accompanied by different Tmp files (at least 2 of which will not be deleted) after each reboot.

The only file I managed to delete was vbsys2.dll and that was manually after checking in the folder after a reboot.

Oh just a couple of other things I have noticed...

When I search on google, the first page has been looking like bogus results and are always the same web pages but with the search string incorporated into the content. I have just tested this to give examples but it isnt doing it now. I hope that makes sense. I also thought it redirected to shareweb or something when clicking a link.

Also, I have noticed a mysterious folder has recently appeared:
c://3a780cc9f8587796ce2b7d
It contains 3 folders: sp1qfe, sp2qfe and update
probably innocent but I havent noticed it before. tried deleting / moving / renaming some of the files but it wont let me do anything...

You think it is frustrating for you, I can't get my hand on that computer and stuff that works time and again, you tell me will not work? You can see this junk in the log so you know it is getting on the computer some way.

Please post in the normal black color, my eyes can not look at that blue...thanks.

1) Please start with this link: http://www.uploadmalware.com/
This is the file you will upload: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssqpq.dll
Use this: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=6066
as the topic where the file was requested.

2) ewido scan: please delete anything ewido find unless you know it is not bad.
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  2. Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  8. Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

3) Download and scan with BlackLight. Do not fix anything, just post the scan:
https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml

Post the ewido scan report, the report from the BlackLight scan and a new HJT log.

Here are online scanners if you need to check to see if something is bad.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Thanks

Kate, Atribune has released a new version of Vundofix and new instructions for using it. Once you post the ewido scan results and the BlackLight results, would you delete all of the Vundofix stuff you have on hand as it does change daily (will change again once the file I asked you to upload gets there)

Then download the Vundofix again from this link: http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe

and follow these instructions: Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot

I apologize, the hackers don't throw the junk at us in any particular order so there is no "exact way" to remove the stuff. If we work together, we can defeat them.

Thanks...Phil

Don't forget you can PM me here: http://forums.spybot.info/private.php?do=newpm&u=233
If you need to ask a quick question. I will do my best to supply you with an answer.

Firstly, I *really* appreciate you taking the time out to help me with this...

1)I uploaded the file no problems.

Hi Kate, I am sure you can see the same things as me. BlackLight reports no rootkit.
eiwdo tried to remove:
[592] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe -> Downloader.Agent.apd : Error during cleaning.
[604] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe -> Downloader.Agent.apd : Error during cleaning.
and was unsuccessful.

I see no mention of rather you ran the last Vundofix I posted here about: Yesterday, 19:11
Possible that the file you uploaded is now included in the fix. I see no mention of Vundo in the ewido scan, but it will not remove the infection.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6E685D62-0F32-4668-9386-000ECB91663E} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssqpq.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqpq - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssqpq.dll
The above is the Vundo infection. I will repost that information here:

Of couse we have more to do, let's see if we can get rid of Vundo before we move on. It is important, once again, that we do not pick up more infections. Keeping the computer offline is the only way we can be sure. These infections have no doubt corrupted your security programs and they will have to be reinstalled once we get you clean.

Oops...sorrry, did not see the Vundo information. Give me a few moments and I will post again.

Thanks

Good Job, Kate, Vundo is removed, let's see if we can remove anything else before we have to try Avenger (our last tool)

What I want you to do, and I will wait until you have time just as long as you leave the computer offline to stop more infection.

I want you to carefully use the HJT tool to attempt to remove this junk one more time. I do not want you to attempt to do multiple files, I want you to do them one at a time and report to me the results of each attempt. Tell me exactly what happens, what messages you receive.

Here is the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
and the instructions, read them carefully...remember, one file at a time.

Here are the files.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\idd49.tmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winxtx32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL

You will have to look in the log to see if you were successful. If you are the item will appear with (file missing) after it like that.

depending on your success, next I would like you to use Killbox again, and make sure you read and understand the instructions before you start.
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=320

Do the same thing there, enter the files one at a time and post the results of the attempt so I will know what happened.

Thanks

Hi Kate, This appears to be a good program, if you want to download it and give it a try, it can't hurt anything I can see.
http://fileinfo.prevx.com/spyware/qq78f829590159-RMAS19277526/RMASS.EXE.html
Seems to be valid, and I have found other helpers using it.

http://www.prevx.com/
Download Prevx1 free of charge now to disinfect your PC and clean up the mess.
It might save you a lot of hard tedious manual work.
Since it is free, where can you go wrong, give it a try if you like. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Hi,

I went through the files one by one using HJT's delete on reboot facility:
Rmass - wouldn't delete.
idd49.tmp.exe - wasn't there for me to select
wintxt32.dll - seems to be successfully deleted!
recover32.dll - wouldn't delete.

I then used killbox for the stubborn 2 (one by one).
Killbox couldn't end the process for Rmass.
On standard kill (on both occasions) I got the following message:
"This File could not be deleted"
I then tried the delete on reboot option again one by one but the files still won't delete.
I even tried replace on delete but they are still there.

I am now in the process of trying the Prevx1 tool and will post the results.

Thanks, Kate

OK. I tried the Prevx1 utility and it picked up a few things - most significantly, the Rmass and Recover32 files.

I let it clean it up but when I checked a couple of hours later it had froze at 89%. I looked at Windows Task Manager and noticed that Rmass wasn't running! So I snook into the system32 folder - it was there so i deleted it and it went. Emptied my recycle bin and it has gone. Phew.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't let me do the same for Recover32.dll.

I rebooted the pc and tried to clean up with Prevx1 again but it froze at 24% this time.
