ok thanks for the info. we are making progress.
lots of software checks for updates. the feature can usually be disabled or tuned off from settings in the software. look down by your clock, do you see any software running that might be updating? also please provide another hjt log since its been awhile, maybe that will provide a clue.

why notepad is closing on you, i really have no idea.
a warning sound you say? it would have to be produced by some software on your computer. i cant think of any that produces a warning sound.

Ok, I turned off some of the things in the system tray in the lower right corner, and the "automaticaupdate" error message hasn't shown up in a while. Before doing that, it would happen every 3-5 minutes (it was getting really annoying). Next, I'll try shutting them off one by one to find out which it is.

The warning sound that I heard is the same sound that accompanies the "automaticaupdate" error message, just without the message. About 3-5 minutes after I turned off those items in the system tray, I heard that warning sound, unaccompanied by the message. I just heard it again, about 5 minutes later.

you can click on the icons to launch the software and poke around in like settings/preferences to see if there are any options to disable or turn off automatic updates.

anything you have set to update automatically or is that way by default and you turn off--you would have to update it manually. your antivirus or antispyware i would leave alone, but there are loads of software that this option can be turned off. sounds like a process of elimination. once you find whats causing the message you should know the source of the sound. i dont know of any that would produce a sound off hand.

I have seen other apps get closed like task manager or regedit due to malware. your log looks ok as far as that goes. cant really provide help for that, i would think its a registry setting but iam only guessing.

Different Approach

Ok, so I tried something different. I logged in via the better half's log-on and ran spybot. It found MediaMotor and that the Task Manager had been locked. So it fixed that. I then installed HJT on her desktop, and ran it. Here is the log:

Oh, yeah, one last thing, that automaticaupdate thing that flashes on the screen momentarily flashes on the screen on her logon also. It continues to flash even though I've closed all the same items from system tray that I closed in my log-on. One other thing I noticed is that it only flashes/tries "updating" when IE is open. At least that's what I've noticed.

Hope this sheds some light on what might be wrong. Thanks for all your help so far.

I forgot one more thing. A few minutes after logging on my wife's account, I got an error message saying that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It gave the 3 options (Debug, Send Error Report, and Don't Send). Previous experience told me to ignore it and keep working. Then, when I was running Spybot, I got that same error message (SpybotSD.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.)

Ok, I let the scan run overnight. This morning, I saw that it was ready to clean the files that it found (it said 1 virus, 17 skipped, and 5 spyware). I hit the button to clean it, and the entire desktop wiped out. It went all the way to wallpaper and that was all it showed. No icons, no windows, no task bar/start menu, nothing. I thought maybe that it does this as it cleans, so I left it alone and went to work. Come back, and it still shows nothing but the wallpaper. I did manage to get the task manager to show up by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, chose to log-off, then booted the computer back up. Should I run that scan again? Anyways, here's the HJT log:

A few observations:

1) That annoying "automaticaupdate" error message has stopped popping up.

2) Notepad doesn't close down on its own when trying to "save as" anymore.

3) That "details.pif" entry you told me to "fix" in HJT reappeared after "fixing" it. Can't find it on the desktop.

thanks for the info. I have no idea why F-secure would cause such problems. maybe something locked it up during the clean process? i wouldnt repeat the sca.

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.
