moderator is an extremely interesting word.

In nuclear reactions a moderator is a medium which reduces the velocity of fast neutrons.

In discussions (debates) a moderator is a facilitator who acts like a judge (or arbitrator) to keep the flow of the discussion (or debate) on track and within the guidelines of the discussion or debate.

A moderator can also be a go-between.
