XP Security 2012 Unregistred Version virus...please help

Yep, I had already done that...actually, it's always been unchecked. I had read somewhere about a registry fix...pchelpforum, with a suggestion from Geekgirl, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it...never diddled with my registry before.
Here's what she posted to someone looking for the same relief.

Hello and Welcome back to PCHF
First, In the explorer window, go to Tools / Options / View tab / uncheck Restore previous folder windows at logon if checked.
If not checked, look at these registry values and see if explorer is listed :
Two main locations exist in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
The Data field lists the program and its associated information. You may right-click on any program and choose delete to prevent it from executing at startup.

Does this sound do-able?

I guess I could always try contacting ATI, but I read that their Customer Service is horrible.
Thanks
AWhang

Hi Blade81,
I might have gotten it. I used regedit and found an ATI related key under the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run location. I added a few dashes (---) which I read acts like commenting out a key without actually deleting it (in case I ever need it back).
Anyways, it looks like that worked and the annoying window didn't pop back. Is it safe to leave a key commented out like that or should I just delete it.
If delete, could you make a fix.reg script to kill it? I could remove the dashes first if that would make things easier.

It's now...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\---C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe

The three dashes are mine.

Many Thanks
AWhang

Hi,

The registry fix I asked you to run earlier should had done that same thing. Of some reason something didn't go like planned since the value was still present in your DDS log. You could undo that registry modification you made, disable AVG (it may have prevented the change earlier) and then do fix.reg in my earlier post again.

ATI window...

I tried it again.
First, I restored the regedit change I made.
I double checked that AVG Resident Shield is off.
...I don't see any check boxes for the rest of AVG.
I also ran the fix.reg in safe mode.
Didn't work, the ATI window came back.
Do I have something else that needs to be disabled? Is my system actively restoring the key or am I not killing it?
Curious.

How's the rest of my machine looking? If this is the last bit, I can actually live with the window. It's comforting to know that the rest of the system is OK...thanks to all your help!
AW

Hi,

Since you've been in registry editor already I think we can do the fix there :)

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key. See ATIPTA value on the list on the right side. Right click it and select delete. That should take care of it.

Great :)

It's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and fix its findings. Leave the program installed so you'll stay alarmed about vulnerable components in future too.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Final stretch...

Hello Blade81,
Per your directions...

I've turned off, then on, the System Restore.

I successfully uninstalled Combofix...interesting that I had to always run anything to do with CF in safe mode, including the uninstall, but it worked.

My Windows should be grabbing updates on its own...I get easily confused about this, but I thought I had something to check on Microsoft Windows updates. Secunia PSI did find 3 Microsoft related updates that I had been holding off updating during this recent fix session. I thought I used Secunia just now to update, but my automatic updates shield (yellow shield with exclaimation point) is still up. I'll update those ASAP.

I don't actually use Internet Explorer, but I've followed the suggested settings.

Downloaded Secunia, but noticed that stuff like my Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, although really old, isn't up-date-able. Not sure what to do about those. I need them, but rarely.

I noticed that my Windows | Start | All Programs | list has shrunken quite noticeably. Stuff like Media Player Classic, my Microsoft Office stuff, and others are no longer listed. I was happy to see that I can edit .doc as Word would come up, it's just not listed in my All Programs list, so I'm not sure how to start a new .doc if and when I need to.

I'm sending along another DDS and ATTACH.zip for you as well. System is humming along as normal now, and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware ran as normal...whew!

Again, many thanks for your continued help and patience. This has been a real nerve wracking time for me, but your instructions and help inspired confidence that whatever was ailing my system could and would be resolved. It's a great service you provide for us who flounder around in cyber space:)

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to change anything. I ran it once, then read that I may need to run it with security systems off.
I shut down AVG resident shield, went into safe mode, and reran the tool.
My Start | All Programs | still is missing the same items I mentioned.

From what you've seen, is the only protection on this machine my AVG suite of tools? I'm hoping that I'm disabling the correct items. Same thing was plaguing me with running ComboFix.

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry to say but those items have to be manually added back. Your system likely had an infection that moved those start menu items out of reach. Or did those items disappear during the cleaning process?

For example to create a shortcut for Word:
1. Navigate to the Office folder (c:\program files\microsoft office\office).
2. Look for WinWord.exe file, right click and select send to->desktop (create shortcut). That will create a shortcut to your desktop.

Information about adding items to start menu here.

Missing programs in Start | All Programs | ...

Hello Blade81,

Actually, as long as I can still access the programs, it's fine that they aren't listed. My original list was getting pretty long and cumbersome as it was. I'm just glad that they are actually still accessible. When I didn't see them in the list I originally thought I had lost them.

Will any of the maintenance things we did help my system load my preferences any faster. That's the only time I feel a big lag, after restarting my system and right after logging in. I don't think I have a lot on my desktop and I'm not sure about my \Start Menu\Programs\...

Are things in \Start Menu\Programs\... actually started up? and taking up memory and cpu processing time? E.G. if Calendar Maker is in my \Start Menu\Programs\, what is actually happening with it? Can I delete it from my \Start Menu\Programs\ and just access it from c:\Program Files\ when I actually need it?
Would that make my system wake up faster?

Other than that, how is everything looking? Clean bill of health? :)

-Thanks
AW

Hi,

Removing items from start menu list is not a good idea and won't speed up performance. If hard drive hasn't been defragged lately then it would be recommended to do so. For defragging I'd use 3rd party solution. Good commercial ones are PerfectDisk and Diskeeper. Of free options I recommend MyDefrag and Piriform Defraggler.

Logs themselves don't show any infection remaining :)

Thank You!

Hi Blade81,
I'll try one of the free ones you mentioned for defragging...I've always used the one found under Properties.

Again, thanks so much for your time and patience with me and my system. Have a good day!

Thanks
