Hi

Looks like you ran gmer straight from the zip. Please do following:
Click start> run> write gmer.exe and click ok. Gmer starts.
Right mouse button click> options> select non ms only> scan> save/post log.

Edit: Run also registry search tool for 85.255 and post back the results of that log.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT (go straight to "Inside the new folder..." -step if you still have ERUNT installed:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe


Click Start then Run
Type in regedit
Click Ok.

In left pane of registry editor, Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{D521FC4C-7F3A-4FA6-9238-E811BFB12981} and see if you can see NameServer value under it. If it exists double click on it and empty value that begins 85.255.x.x where x is some number. Click ok.

If you have trouble modifying the value, click once on the {D521FC4C-7F3A-4FA6-9238-E811BFB12981} to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Edit. Uncheck Allow inheritible permissions and press copy. Click on everyone and put a checkmark in full control, press apply and ok and attempt to modify the value again.



When all these cleanings are done reboot the system and run registry search like you did previously.

I deleted the 85.222 values from nameserver in control set002 and on rebot, I checked and it was empty however I checked control set001 and they had appeared there. I deleted and on reboot nameserver was empty however, now the 85.255 appears in current control which I deleted but continues to appear there after reboot... ?

Could you set manually system's DNS settings with the same 2 values found in your router settings and then do a reboot to see if it works ok?

Could you uninstall and then reinstall your network card drivers and related software (also router's if available)? If it still replaces the DNS values after reboot then I suggest you do following if you have a spare network card available:
1. Uninstall Intel network card drivers & software
2. Unplug your Intel network card
3. Plug in your spare network card and install required drivers for it
4. Making sure that your router still has DNS settings different from 85.255.x.x enable Obtain DNS servers automatically thru networking connections as you've done a couple of times before this.

I spoke to my service provider who supplied the Gateway and they told me their is no sw on the PC, as the Gateway maintains the connection and just plugs into the ethernet port.

They seemed to think that the issue is with my system as opposed to the Gateway.

An 017 entry 85.255 x.x now appears in HJT log...

I noticed on start up the DNS are 85.255 however if I run HJT and fix the 017 entry the DNS setting goes back to auto select until I rebot the system.

What does the router settings show now? Is the 85.255.x.x entry back? If it is you have to reset your router again and change password to stronger one if it was too easy last time (don't use anything default value related).

I also still ask you to do as I told you to do in my previous post:
1. Uninstall Intel network card drivers & software
2. Unplug your Intel network card
3. Plug in your spare network card and install required drivers for it
4. Making sure that your router still has DNS settings different from 85.255.x.x enable Obtain DNS servers automatically thru networking connections as you've done a couple of times before this.

I reset the router and changed the password, and since then the 85.255 entries do not appear in DNS settings, nameserver in registry or HJT log. The settings on the Gateway are also as they should be.

Re your request to;
1. Uninstall Intel network card drivers & software
2. Unplug your Intel network card

Is this still necessary?

I don't have a spare and this system is a laptop so not sure what I will be un plugging?

Hi

So, is there any sign of 85.255 in work station's networking settings? If there isn't then it looks good.

Trying with another network card in laptop is very difficult especially while those are usually integrated ones. Thought you could had tried with spare network card if you had had one and it had been desktop model PC.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis



Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.



UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.



The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download SpywareBlaster
    Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
    in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
    If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok
  • Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here to choose one if you don't have any installed.


Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Couple of questions;
1. On startup Zonealarms comes up with a warning that IBM Access connections is accessing Toolbar application QCtray.exe. Is there a way of stopping this?

2. The homepage for Internet explorer is google UK and if I change it under Options/settings it seems to revert back. I noticed the first entry in the HJT log is google UK?

1. It shouldn't notify about the connection when you check "Remember this answer the next time I use the program" -checkbox and click yes. That program is legal so you can allow it. :)

2. Try fix following entry with hjt and reboot the system after that:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/
