ZLOB dnschanger

Thanks to Zenobia for the referral.

Recently the trojan zlob.dnschanger infected my computer. I have been unable to delete it or get rid of it. It launces with Verizon dsl startup and takes the form of

HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE-SYSTEM-CONTROLSET001-SERVICES-TCPIP-PARAMETER-INTERFACES-29486e....-NAMESERVER
HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE-SYSTEM-CURRENTCONTROLSSET-SERVICES-TCPIP-PARAMETERS-INTERFACES-29486E......NAMESERVER

with dns numbers REG_SZ 85.255.113.138. and 255.112.115

Spybot finds and disables them but restart and launch of Verizon they are back.

Have changed all my financial links and passwords but I would like to rid myself of them once and for all.

I have read several forums about this and have tried a few things. Can anyone help?

Thanks for your help PSKELLEY.
I followed a couple of your posts from other Zlob posts.
Let me rehash a couple of things.

Norton Internet Security does not find DNSchanger.

SpyBot does see it and says it disables it but everytime I relaunch Verizon connection ZLOB returns.

So, I start the PC open Verizon and then run SpyBot. Hopefully I am running clean but it isn't very re-assuring.

Read the files you recommended.

Thanks for returning your information. Let's look at the eTrust scan first, you are showing me an infected Java cache, follow these instructions to clean it:

I believe they are also using these next IP numbers also, so if this Network name has nothing to do with you, remove them with HJT as I have scheduled.

1) Spyware Doctor may block the tools we must use, turn it off until you are done.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

2) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

(wait until you are finished to post the reports)

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the report from Fixwareout, a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running now.

Finally, after finishing I ran SpyBot again and it reports

This was as you suspected a corruption. Went back and ran HJT scan only but that item is not present. What is there is
HKLM\system...NameServer = 85.255.113.138 85.255.112.115. So I ran SCAN ONLY checked and fixed the above. I am going to restart the computer and see where I am at. But wanted to give you an update.

Hello!

On restarting the system I did not find HKLM... Name Server entries.

Ran SpyBot found nothing

Launched Verizon connection to internet.

Ran SpyBot

Found Zlob dnschanger.

SpyBot also reported a registry change next to the entry.

Thanks for the feedback, what we want to try is running Fixwareout and running HJT back to back, so post a new HJT log and I will post the instructions.

That is unless you have cleared this yourself, you sound like you know what you are doing. I am always trying to stay a step ahead of these lowlifes. My plan is to run Fixwareout, then flush the DNS, then remove the lines with HJT and see what happens. There is no doubt, as we are seeing those other numbers in multiple logs just now, that they have changed their tactics to avoid detection.

There is no reason I know of that we should not be able to remove that item. Let's do this:

Many spyware tools block changes like this, I see no such tool in your HJT log. If you know of anything that might block changes in Symantec, turn it off until you remove the item.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

1) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

2) go to start > run and type in cmd then hit enter.
at the cmd prompt type: ipconfig /flushdns <<< need the space g /

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

and I really do not know why. I can see no program in your HJT log that should be blocking HJT from removing it. Could you try removing it with HJT a couple of times in a row, restarting the computer between removals to see if it will stay gone.

give that information a try to see if it helps remove the junk.
Once you are finish you will still need to remove the line from the HJT log and then reboot to make sure it stays gone.

Death of Zlob. DNSchanger

Hello!

I believe I have solved the problem. As you know, I reported that the problem only arose once I launched Verizon access. It occurred to me that the problem was in the TCP/IP settings. It was. Somehow, the creeps got inside the connection software and reset the DNS setting to 85.255.113.138 and to 85.255.112.115 respectively. The setting should be Allow Verizon to automatically set the DNS address. 71.242.0.12 71.250.0.12

Reasons this happened and possible use for future.

Symantec Internet Security recommends turning off Windows Firewall, which I had done. This creates an entry for hackers which apparently Symantec missed.

It wasn’t the line per se in the highjackthis profile but the address. The line belongs and is generated by the Verizon TCP/IP call. The DNS file had been corrupted and so an incorrect DNS was generated every time Verizon was launched. The solution was found at http://www.microsoft.com/cze/security/incident/sasser_script_tcpfiltering.mspx. But not in the Windows XP-SP2 portion of that text, but in the Windows 2000 script. This because the windows 2000 text deals with a disabled Microsoft Firewall. I hope this info helps in future fixes.

I cannot thank you folks enough. I would have never found this flaw were it not for your help. Your patience and perseverance were outstanding.

Do they supply you with a firewall as part of their service? I also do not use the weak Windows firewall, but I do run Zone Alarm free. Symantec does not ask you to run without a firewall do they?

Thanks for all of that information, I rarely find one this hard to fix. I also use Verizon but I have not had that infection. I will file the information and others will see it posted here at the website.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
