Shuts Down Windows XP

Hello, I'm new to this forum and would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem when they run Spybot S&D? I recently downloaded the newest version of the software and when I ran it, it shut down my pc. So I tried again only to have this shut down my pc again. Is there a setting that I need to change in order for this to stop? This hasn't happened to me before and I've been using Spybot S&D for about 6-8 years. So if anyone has the slightest idea what may be happening, please get back to me. I am running Win XP. Thanks and I really appreciate these forums where an experienced pc user can help the novices.

Spybot is quite CPU intensive. It is possible that the CPU overheating and the system is shutting down to protect the processor.

Skeptical? If you doubt that this can be the cause of a shutdown during a Spybot scan, read the following:
Suggestions:
  1. Make sure that the fans are running and that dust is cleared from any ventilation ports in the case.
  2. For desktops (See Caution! below):
    • Consider opening the case and checking to make sure the CPU heat sink is not dusty or loose.
  3. For laptops (See Caution! below):
    • If your owner's manual tells you how to open the case (IBM ThinkPads and Dell Inspirons generally do), consider opening the case and checking to make sure the CPU heat sink is not dusty.
    • If you have a laptop with one of the one of the following processors:
      • Mobile Pentium III-M
      • Mobile Pentium 4-M
      • Mobile Pentium 4
      • Mobile Pentium M / Centrino
      • Mobile AMD
Take a look at following suggestion by 100mill:
Caution!
  • Before open the case on any PC make sure that you read the owner's manual for that specific PC. This is extremely important not only for your well being due to electrical hazards but also for your PCs well being due to the possibility of static electricity discharges that can damage your PC.
  • There is a tutorial on cleaning desktop computers here:
  • If you are in the least bit hesitant about opening the case of your PC, please err on the side of caution and seek professional help.

Laptop Windows XP Shuts Down

Over the last month my laptop shuts down 2/3 of the way through the scan. Tonight I downloaded a "fresh" version, re-installed and it did same thing. I got upset and registered so I could get to the forum and the first thing I saw was that Stormin1? was having same problem.

The answer I saw was CPU overheating. I have a 1 year old Acer Aspire 5000 64bit Turion and have used Spybot for the last year on it and this just started. I travel a lot and to warm places and I live in the state of Washington and it is cold right now. I keep my house in the mid sixties.

I will put some spacers under the coner pads and keep it higher and see what happens.

I put 1/4' felt pads under laptop in all 4 corners ran Spubot again-no problem. Then to be safe this morning I used the recomendations given to Stormin1 by help "md usa spybot fan" had given to Stormin1. Removed a couple of back plates and vacumed and blew, then did same on bottom and side vents.

If this gets to where it is seen by "md usa...".

Thank You!

Note
I am new at this and I have never liked forums because I am old school (and age) and I do not the take the time to figure out your !&$@ing language (thread?) or help. Someone make it simple. Ex: if you are having a problem with (whatever) go to (wherever) and give it a title (specific or long winded?) then etc?, etc?, etc?

One other note: If you are thinking of getting an Acer laptop make sure you check PC World or other industry pubs for battery life. I have had to buy 2 extra batteries because when I travel from West Coast to East Coast or any trip that is longer than 1:45 min. I am lucking if I get 2 hours. No music while working, definetly graphics, etc.
