65 year old raw newbie needs help... updates stop downloading when about 80% done

Hello,
I SUCK BIGTIME on all things PC. On this laptop when I start to download updates the green bar freezes about 80% done and spins away for over 15 minutes. The last item in the download list is some kind of Trojan....can a trojan stop Spybot from downloading the update needed to kill it?? I probably won't be able to find my way back here, so if anyone knows how I can get all updates to complete downloading please email me via Edit. Please assume I know nothing as you give directions....as I do know virtually nothing when it comes to PC's...Many thanks, Redd

I re-read your post and believe this is the answer to the issue you are experiencing. :)

[h=1]Fix for System Scan freeze on Zlob.ZipCodec[/h] March 22nd, 2016Many users have recently been affected by a feature in the Spybot program that caused the scanner to freeze on the final file of the scan, and the “Settings” button in the Start Center to become unresponsive.
We are happy to announce that we now have a solution for this issue. If you have experienced this issue and have not been sent this fix, please download and run this small installer.
The installer will replace the file we found was causing the issue.
