Antivirus XP Pro malware...please help :(

Hi guys,

My computer was running slow and I was receiving a lot of pop ups, so I decided to run spybot S&D. After doing so, it let me know that there was one thing that could not be fixed and a reboot would be required to attempt to fix it. I suspect that this file they couldn't fix was the Antivirus XP Pro malware which has been bugging me since.

Following the reboot, my computer would not let me into windows, logging me off as soon as I logged on. I googled this problem on a separate computer and solved the problem by copying the userinit.exe file from my OS CD, utilizing the recovery feature. Now I'm back in the computer, and of course, the Antivirus XP pro malware is still present. I only list the details to let you know what exactly transpired as it may serve as helpful reference. I believe I've followed all preliminary instructions and my HJT log is as follows:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Thanks, I will try this momentarily. I wanted to let you know about a couple of other symptoms of this virus.

1. A disabled Task Manager
2. A dialog box threatening a system shutdown, which starts counting down from 1 minute...but if i click anywhere on the screen, it stops the countdown.
3. Infrequent automatic restarts
4. A dialog box about an error with Win32 services (i can't remember all the details)

I don't know if that helps...but i'll run the Combofix now and get back to u.

I'd like you to check a file for malware.

Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's

c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Copy/Paste the file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
Post back results, please.

I'm unable to paste in either box. I'm also unable to click browse in order to go to the directory.

I'm not sure it helps but while doing the combo fix, the following popped up on my screen:

Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine
Kindly note down on paper, the name of each file. We may need it later

No it is realistic

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\userinit.exe | c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

Please copy this file to manually to c:\windows\system32\ and c:\windows\system32\dllcache:

If it asks to overwrite, choose yes.

Rerun combofix and post back a fresh hijackthis log, please.

A few things:

1. I don't have a directory of "c:\windows\system32\dllcache", so I only copied the file to "c:\windows\system32." When I overwrited the file
it told me that 'files that are required to for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system
stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Pro Svc pack CD now.

I closed this box. Then it asked if i'm sure i want to keep these unrecognized file versions...i clicked yes.

2. I'm getting a bunch of spybot s&d popups saying that important registry entries have changed and one by one as they come up they ask to deny or allow change...now there's a teacup in the middle of my screen that makes me think of something in one of the userguides saying to disable teatimer...i did when i initially started this process, so i didn't think i'd need to repeat the process. Let me know if i have repeat everytime i run combofix.

3. Lastly, during this process, i was unable to turn on automatic updates...since your fix, prior to this one, automatic updates is now enabled again. Can i update, or should I wait till we're done with this problem before doing so.

Alot of questions I know, but I'm trying to give u any information I can and ask anything i'm not clear about. Thanks for all your efforts.

1. You have that folder but it might be hidden. See here how to unhide hidden files and folders and let me know if you were now able to find it.

2. Yes TeaTimer needs to be disabled during entire cleaning process or it will interfere it.

3. Please leave updating until you are clean.

I always have the option on to show hidden folders. However, now that I look at my work computer, i see that there's also a "Hide protected operating system files." option...so maybe that's still checked on the infected computer. When I get home I'll check it out.

If it is, i'm guessing next step is to replace that file as well in dllcache, disable teatimer, run a fresh combofix and hjt and post both their logs. Is this correct?

The Teatimer was disabled. However, when I completed my combofix, it popped up again...citing changes to my registry, asking me to allow or deny. These are usually dealing with my nvidia graphics card. *shrugs* Any clue on what's going on there?
