Anyone else's computer running slower?

i have not...

experienced any problems, have you tried using disk cleanup and disk defrag?

do you....

1.) have the latest service pack of XP? (sp3) Just wondering ;)

2.) have you ran all your other scanners? such as antiviruis, other antispyware programs to look for infection?

3.) YOu have never experianced this before the microsoft updates correct?

#1 and #2 yes did scans,,# 3,,no didn't happen before that latest update,,will try to remove when I come home from work tonight,,thanks

No problem

I would do a simple system restore point to solve the problem, wait a week and download and install the updates again. If something like a microsft update caused your computer to go slow, and other users report a problem, microsoft will usaully have it fixed soon after. Maybe the updates just did not install correctaly or something. To be honest, i am not sure why you are experiancing the slowdown. I hope system restore works for you!!

Also please keep me posted, especially if the microsoft updates were the problem. :) Thanks!!

Got a "Win32:Trojen gen (other) has been founbd on a virus scan,,this first poped up this morning while doing a spybot scan,,I thought I deleted it but I also noticed when I start my computer my antivirus,,"avast",,a little red dot appears in the bottom of the round avast icon,,as if the avast hasn't started running yet..it goes away after a very few seconds but that never happened before,,is it possible this trojan is putting itself on my computer before avast has a chance to catch it?,,I won't be back until tonight to look for anymore help

Hmmm...

right click avast and go to update-program update. See if you can update avast. Then right click avast icon again, click start avast antiviruis. do a boot time scan, and then delete anything found. Let me know your results.

Also, try running avast antiviruis scan window in safe mode, and set it to boot time scan if you are unable to load it in windows normal mode.

Finally: If you cannot get avast running, try a simple uninstall and then redownload and install it again.

Let me know your results immediately asap. We can send you to the malware forums if you will still require assistance. Here is the malware forum information for the future in case we cannot solve this problem:

Consider posting in the Malware Removal forum and having someone take a look at your system.

If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log:

* "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance).

After you have completed the required scans and produced the requested logs, start your own thread in the Malware Removal forum, making sure to post the HijackThis log produced from the above instructions.

I'm at work on a different computer so I can't do anything til later on but is a boot time scan the same as scanning in safe mode,,if not, could you explain that term further,,I updated avast this morning but will try again when I get home,,I checked msconfig,,and avast isn't showing in the "start" programs area where things such as spybot ,,tea timer etc are listed,,I checked this against my wifes laptop and hers shows avast in the msconfig "start". I don't know if avast has been corrupted by this and isn't starting in time to catch this trojan,,I'll let you know how I make out later on when I'm home,,again could you explain how to do a boot time scan,,,,,,many thanks. Right now the trojan avast found is in the "chest" but I don't know if that will matter when I reboot. Avast will run but I don't think its starting right away. Like I said theres a little red dot that appears for a short time in the tray icon for avast (the little round ball if your familiar with avast) as the computer is starting,,,this never happened before and doesn't happen with my wifes laptop,,excuse me if any of the terms I use aren';t correct but I'm not very good with computers. One other thing,,could have the bad update file that I tried to install this morning that was listed in your updates have caused this,,I doubt it but just asking,,it was the first update listed that others complained wouldn't d/l. It was the,,,"base hijacker detections",,got a "badchecksum" when I tried to d/l,,again thanks

I thought Spybot-Search&Destroy found the Trojan.Generic... Or was it avast! firebrddriver?

Well, it sounds serious to me (not as serious as a backdoor) but a trojan is serious. It might not intervene with normal activities (in other words, it'll look like it was never there so everything was normal) but it will remain hidden and "stalk" you.

I'll see how the other members at avast! forums respond to this (not only to diagnose what might have occurred, but how to switch avast! on [there should be a autostart option]).

Does Spybot-SD detect anything?

I am not experiencing any problems... although the SpywareBlaster conflict was not resolved (even though it was just a minor one count).

I'll report back.

I was doing a spybot scan when the virus warning poped up from my avast anti-virus,,I was't online at the time or visiting anyweb sites so I don't know what happened. I'm going to run a scan in safe mode and will get back. Avast does start,,but just prior to it actually starting I noticed a red circle with a diagonal line going thru it as if it wasn't running yet and then it disappears when it starts,,I'm assuming that of course. I never had that problem prior to this morning and like I said,,,avast doesn't show if I run msconfig and click on "startup",,, as a matter of fact avast doesn't show at all even unclicked. I think I may have to uninsall avast to fix that part of the problem. I'm going to run a virus scan in safe mode and will get back when I can

OK this is getting a bit screwy for me,,did a scan in the safe mode,,nothing detected,,restarted the computer and figured I'd do a scan again,,well when the avast scan opens,,it looks like it does when I scanned in the safe mode,,you know what I mean,,the box just doesn't look right,,,its a completely different look to it,,plus,,when I start the computer now avast starts right up,,theres no red circle with a line running thru it..I'm going to do another scan and see what happens now,,I just can't figure it out,,think I may have to do an un-install and then re-install,,,btw avast still doesn't show in the msconfig startup.

I have not received a response to the thread in avast! forums, so it'll take some time.

Did the circle+line look something like the attachment?

This might mean that avast!'s Resident Shields were disabled... possibly.

A changed skin? Was it from the default? Did it happen everytime (like boot of PC or boot of avast!)

Yes thats exactlly what it looked like only much smaller,,only lasted for a very few seconds,,I beleive the shields are all on normal setting,,and the changed skin,,I don't know what happened there except it didn't appear that way prior to me doing a scan in the safe mode. I think I'll go to bed and work on this tomm,,thanks for your help,,I'm sorta lost here,,do you know if theres anyway to change the skin appearence manually?,,theres nothing in the avast settings under appearence to allow me to do that,,btw I e-mailed avast and explained this to them also,,I'm waiting for a reply to see if they can help me,,does anyone here think an uninstall and reinstall will help,,and if i uninstall avast will the trojan in the virus chest come back as the program its being isolated in will no longer exist,,I've always wondered that myself.

like i said

try scanning with avast with a bootime scan, read the avast help file or avast website help to learn how to do that. I have avast, and its great. However, you might need to uninstall and reinstall avast and try again to scan. If you keep having problems, visit the malware forums like i suggested here: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=233390&postcount=9

Also thanks for the above posts and your help drragostea :)
If you have any better ideas, don't hesitate.

I ran a boot time scan and everything seems to be OK with that,,also did a spybot scan again with negative results,,,d/l'ed a new skin,,computer still seems to be slower than normal but I'm happy with these results,,I won't be able to reply to any further posts til later on tonight or maybe even tomm,,thanks for everyone who has tried to help me in this.

Looks like your problems weren't caused by tuesday's windows updates. I was wondering if I should update or not when I finally get on my computer again for a minute. :red: Good luck with that trojan, dude.
