Ok, I need help! I have a dns-look-up problem that is not being detected by various tools (adaware etc) and the only references I can find seem to indicate that there is a searchbar associated with it. Not his one!

Grateful for any assistance offered – HJT log below:

Thanks!

Thanks LRJ,

I persevered last Sunday and managed to at least stop the symptoms of the problem (endless pop-ups) but have posted the file as requested here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2822.0

It was my daughter who installed Messenger so couldn’t tell you if she included Adaware but (if we’re talking about the same program) I re-installed Ad-Aware SE last week which when used with a combination of others, cleared the problem.

Cheers,

T

Thanks for attaching that, the database i check now includes mention of that orange toolbar and says it is ok.

By adware i did not mean the program ad-Aware, messenger plus will install sponcer software (adware) if you let it, although i dont see sings of it i recommend uninstalling messengerplus.

You solved the popups problem ?
Any other problems ?

Many thanks,

I think I'm pretty clean now and popups have long gone. I'll also be getting rid of M+.

One general question you might be able to answer: the popups I was getting appeared to be from reputable companies e.g Woolworths amongst others (I wouldn't call the on-line casinos "reputable"). Does this mean they sponser and approve the use of malware?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the links. I think (another) lesson in internet security for the kids is due...

Still don't understand what link a company like Woolworths would have with malware producers. Is this solely a way of pointing you to sites where you may be tempted to enter credit card/personal details which they can highjack and use for their own means?

Im not sure
I doubt it had anything to do with credit cards, more likey someone down the line was getting paid to push popups.

So that would suggest that they are, perhaps indirectly and in ignorance, sponsoring malicious software producers to waste people's time? Think I’ll have a vent at them and see what they have to say on the matter…

As the problem appears to be resolved this topic has been archived. :)

If you need it re-opened please send me or your helper a private message (pm) and provide a link to the thread; this applies only to the original topic starter.
