Infected with Virtumonde, Virtumonde.prx, and FirewallBypass

I started getting random browser pop-ups in Firefox today. After running Spybot, I've found 1 file and 4 registry entries for Virtumonde.prx, 1 registry entry for Virtumonde, and 2 registry entries for Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass.

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I followed the directions on the link provided, turning off TeaTimer and McAfee beforehand. However, Combofix.exe does not appear to be running correctly. It will show a progress bar, but no command prompt window shows up to detail progress after that. Did I miss something?

Please install next recovery console as instructed in link I gave.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

I just want to clarify the order of operations, since some things did not run as intended the first time. Originally, I had dragged the windows recovery file on combofix, but I don't believe the windows recover console was installed (just as combofix did not fully run when I tried running that before going into safe mode). Also, when I ran combofix in safe mode, it could not install the windows recovery console due to the lack of an internet connection.

Should I retry dragging the windows recovery file ("WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe") to ComboFix.exe?

Good then it is combofix bug.

Go to Start > Run
Type regedit and click OK.

  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to "File > Export"
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
    • Leave the "Save As Type" as \Registration Files".
    • Under "Filename" put backup
  • Choose to save it to C:\ or in somewhere else safe location so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the Desktop!)
  • Click Save and then go to File > Exit.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

Go to Desktop, double-click fix.reg and merge the infomation with the registry.

Reboot.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Empty Recycle Bin.

All other viruses are in system restore and inactive.

I give you later instructions how to empty it.

Spybot is still detecting Virtumonde.prx. There are only 2 registry entries now, as opposed to the 5 or so from before.
