Is Safe Mode necessary to remove FakeAlert-B?

I clearly have FakeAlert-B on my Windows XP machine but I am not able to start Windows in Safe Mode. That problem occurred before being infected by the popups in FakeAlert. Instead when I try Safe Mode I get the blue screen with the Stop: 0 D1 code for DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Should I try to follow the instructions posted by Tashi on 2006-04-26, 19:22 without being in Safe Mode?

Go ahead an run smithfraudfix option 2 without being in safe mode, afterwards do a full scan with Ewido then SpyBot and your antivirus programs
 
Problem with Ewido

Ran Smitfraud with option 2.

However, Ewido would only run through 50% of the files before it just stopped. It had found about 266 occurences by then. It started quickly and I thought it would take less than 1/2 hour. At the 50% point it slowed to a crawl. I was not looking at the computer when it stopped and it did not give me an opportunity to save a log file.

By the way the popups from FakeAlert-B seemed to have stopped. Has McAfee found that piece of malware?

How should I proceed?

I tried Ewido several times with same result. Have tried turning off networking and McAfee but that has had no effect.

Will send rapport.txt on Monday when I return to my computer.

First I looked at the Device Manager and did not find any exclamation marks.

Occaionally I am getting a message from McAfee to remove a PUP. I have not replied to do so yet and have just indicated to continue doing what I was doing.

Currently I am not seeing all the pop-ups or the messages saying I need to buy the Virus removal software. Also the red triangle is not appearing on my task bar. When the triangle had appeared in the past it also coincided with 100% CPU usage which of course slowed down any useful work on the computer.

I would still like to continue working with you to have a better way to track and eliminate future problems.
