Regarding the strange error message at shutdown, it has occurred three times since 17 August (17, 19, and 28th) according to my daily log. Yes, maybe a little anal retentive, but I like to note start time, shut down, downloads, broadband status (our supplier is often unreliable), and any strange happenings, like error messages, etc. I used to just hit turn off computer and walk away, but one night I heard the little MS chord, looked back just in time to see an error box disappear. So now I will wait till the screen goes dark, with pen and paper handy so that I can fill in the missing parts of the error message. If I ever get the full message, I will post to you.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate your help and advice. My computer is clean again! Best of luck to you in your training. I hope you graduate with honors!

Thanks for the kind words, GeorgeC. It is great to see that your computer is clean. :bigthumb:

I'll keep this thread open for a few more days to see if you get the error message again.

Strange Error Message at Shutdown

I have been watching the shutdown sice my last post. Error messages occurred on 17, 19, and 28 August, and on 3 September. I had been watching the screen with a small handheld video camera nightly, and caught a shot of the error message last night. However, it was out of focus, so still don't have necessarily a complete text. But it goes something like this: Application Error. Instruction at "0x69532997" at memory location "0x0000000" could not be read. Click OK to shut down program now." And the screen goes blank within seconds without a click. There always seem to be some programs that have delayed closings, such as Symantec applications, Spysweeper, and occasionally DDE Server. The little closing the program box comes up, program shuts down, and the shutdown cycle progresses. There seems to be no noticeable effect on the computer. I have run the check disk function, and no errors were found. I am more curious than concerned at this point.

Hi GeorgeC.

Next time the error comes up on the screen, see if its possible to get a screenshot of it. If you are able to get one post it here or post just the error message from the screenshot, if you can't post the screenshot.

To make a screenshot, follow the instructions below:

1. When the error message shows up on the screen, press the PrtScrn/SysRq button.

2. Open MS-Paint. (From Start/Run, issue the command "mspaint".) Create a new empty image, and use Edit/Paste to bring in the screenshot you just took.

3. In MS-Paint, click File-Save As, saving the screenshot as .jpg format.

There is also the possibilty that this may not be malware-related. You might want to try posting the screenshot/error message at one of the following forums:

Can't send a screen shot; the error message appears during the last 5-10 seconds of the Windows closing screen. Most of Windows is closed at that time, and a screen shot will not work, or certainly won't be saved during next boot. I will just keep watching for it, and either get better at taking videocam pictures of it, or watch it enough to fill in the blanks in the message. Thanks for the links to the various helper forums. When I get enough info I will use them. Thanks for all your help. I think we can close this thread off now, if you wish.
