multiple problems

but am aprehensive about how much the host file one will slow down my computer. Based on your experience does the host file one have a noticeable effect in games, internet, or just general performance?

I haven't seen any slowdowns on any machine I'm using the hosts file on. I'd say you can safely install it :)

As for updates, doesnt windows automatically download updates?

Yes, if it's set to automatically update. You can check that thru Windows Security center.
