Unable to remove Virtumonde - TR/Dldr.ConHook.Gen

Hi,

I'm having an impossible time trying to remove Virtumonde from my computer. I've tried removing it with AntiVir and Spybot, and tried manually deleting the file with KillBox, all of which have not been successful. I would greatly appreciate any help getting rid of this from my system. My HiJack this log is posted below:

1) Let's get this out of the way first, since it is optional:

For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

2) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

4) C:\Program Files\HijackThis\scanner.exe.exe <<< delete this old version completely from your computer.

5) Download this self-installer and follow the prompts, it will install to the correct location:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's do this now and in the posted order.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: ]C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kb1603.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

I'm stuck at Part 4/5.

I checked all the boxes from instruction 4, and tried to manually delete the kb1603.dll file and got the following error message:

"Error deleting file or folder. Cannot delete: It is being used by another person or process. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

Unlocker 1.8.5 opens or me and shows the following:

OK...listen up, there is no such thing as a file you can not delete, some may be tough, but they can be deleted. First you tell me about iussues in 4/5 but the tool that should have dleted this file you never mention any problems running it. What happened when you tried to run the deleete on reboot tool?
I also see a reference to Killbox in the combofix log, did you try to use killbox on this file? You need to provide me with all information, how else can I help you?

A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kb1603.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

report exactly what happens if there are any issues removing that file.

Sorry, I just re-read my previous pot and realized it was unclear. Here's what I did before. I followed the instruction for step 4 (HijackThis, config, misc tools, delete on reset, navigate to file, click open, clicked yes to restart). System restarted without any error messages.

When I went to step 5, (right click start, expolore, navigate to file, delete), that's when I encountered the error message. I did try to use KillBox to delete the file, but I got a similar error message.

After reading your most recent post, I went to the Kaspersky site and ran their scan for my computer, their report says my system had no Malware.

I then followed Step 2 (HijackThis, delete on reset), the system restarted without any error messages. At this point, I right clicked start, explore, an navigated to the windows\system32 folder, and saw that the file kb1603.dll is still there. I tried to delete it and got the same error message.

Below are the Kaspersky report and the most recent HijackThis log. Is my system clean then even though I can't seem to get rid of that kb1603.dll file?

I am having problems getting you to follow directions. At no time did I ask you to run a Kaspersky online scan. You need to follow directions or I can not help you.

Here are the directions I posted:

When you open the link you will see a a white box with the words "File to upload & scan and the word browse to the right. Click the word browse and navigate until you get to this file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kb1603.dll When that file is in the white box, click on "Submit" and after a few minutes you will receive a report about that file, copy and paste that report so I can see it. All three scans will work about the same. I need that information to see what that file is. It will do you no good to tell me you have problems and then not follow the directions I need you to follow.

My browser speed is noticeably slower and I get a bunch of random pop up ads that I have not gotten in the past, so I would like to remove the file since it seems that it is the case of the problem, unless there is some horrible adverse consequence to having it removed.

Follow these instructions carefully!
1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

• Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
• Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kb1603.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

• Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
• Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
• Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
• Click Done
• Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
• Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

• It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
• On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
• After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
• The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply
