hi cesarper,

ok thanks for the info. vundo and sdfix came up clean. first we will use hjt. i should have posted to use it earlier to clean up those 04's.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000012-890e-4aac-afd9-eff6954a34dd} - (no file)

select all those 02- BHO that end in (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntiVirusPro] C:\Program Files\AntiVirusPro\AntiVirusPro.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SSK Service] C:\Documents and Settings\Ale\Desktop\UNKNOWN_PARAMETER_VALUE\details.pif

O4 - Global Startup: AutorunsDisabled
-------------------------------------------------
next:
to show all files do this:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

navigate here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and delete the .exe >>ctfmona.exe

Note you may see this one:cftmon.exe which is OK note spelling difference between the two.

if you cant delete it try this: bring up task manager by hitting the ctrl-alt-delete keys at once. under the process tab look for ctfmona.exe in the list. if you see if running click on it and then click on end process, then go back and try to delete it.
-----------------------------------------
we are going to run the first step of smitfraudfix again, but lets get a new copy as its updated. you can delete your old copy off the desktop. just run the first step (search):

download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop:

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt

stop at this point and post a HijackThis log along with the contents of the c:\rapport.txt.

hi cesarper,

ok thanks for the info.

Just FYI, you said run CF again, but this is the 1st time we've run it.
sometimes i dont go back and read the previous pages.

The computer is running great.

Microsoft Defender found a program it doesn't like, though:

Program:Win32/PSGuard

Category:
Potentially Unwanted Software

Description:
This program has potentially unwanted behavior.

Advice:
Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do not like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.

Resources:
regkey:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\UNINSTALL\Anti Virus Pro spyware remover

uninstall:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\UNINSTALL\Anti Virus Pro spyware remover

file:
C:\Program Files\AntiVirusPro\uninstall.exe->(nsis-4-$(PLUGINSDIR)\Mutex.dll)

containerfile:
C:\Program Files\AntiVirusPro\uninstall.exe

Otherwise, as I said, it's running great, no pop-ups, no mystery windows flashing, no redirections on IE.

Just noticed: Notepad still closes on its own anytime I try to open or "save as" a file. No error message, it just closes after about 3 seconds.

hi,

i saw this also: Anti Virus Pro. thought maybe smitfraud would take care of it. have alook in the add/remove programs panel and see if its listed. if so uninstall it. if its not look here:

C:\Program Files\AntiVirusPro
and double click:
uninstall.exe
---------------------------------------
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

reboot and post new hjt log and let me know if you uninstalled that antivrus

HJT Log

I still have that problem with notepad that causes it to close when I try to "Save As." Anti Virus Pro appears to be gone after uninstalling via the "Add or Remove" function in Control Panel.

Otherwise, the computer is running great.

I finally was able to get a glimpse of that error message that randomly flashes on my screen once in a while. The only thing I was able to read before it disappeared were the words "automatic" and "update." I *believe* it was actually "automaticaupdate" but I can't remember for sure. I'm trying to get a screen capture to read it fully. I'll let you know if I get it.

hi cesarper,

does anything else close other than notepad. go to start>run and type in regedit.exe then ok. see if registry editor opens ok.

shelf life

Regedit is fine, until I go to File->Import or File->Export. Otherwise, if I just leave regedit open on its own, it doesn't close on its own.

Oooh... just got a better glimpse of that error message. It said: Cannot find http://[don't know what was here]automaticaupdate[some more gobblygook that I couldn't read fast enough]

That's what it looked like, at least.

Hope it makes sense.

Windows Defender continues to find that Win32/PSGuard. Here's the info that posts with it:

Description:
This program has potentially unwanted behavior.

Advice:
Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do not like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.

hi,

not sure about the notepad problem, sounds like a registry problem. sometimes malware/virus can disable these things. your antivirus up to date?

looks like something is trying to update from that message. look by the system clock, see any software running that could be trying to update? alot of times these options can be turned off. you would have to update manually then.
a software firewall would help to get a handle on traffic leaving your computer.

the defender msg is about a file in your restore archive. we can clean it out like this:

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.
To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot. (will delete possibly infected restore points)

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Reboot (new clean restore point)

Ok, all done, new restore point is set. Still get that problem with notepad, and I still get that error message. Otherwise, computer works great. Defender isn't finding anything on its autoscan. What else should I do?

Ok, here's something. I updated Symantec and started running a scan, and I got the "Symanted AntiVirus has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message. I didn't choose an option (send error report, debug, don't send), and Symantec continued scanning in the background.

I also updated Spybot and began running it. It just started and it already found Aconti. This and Symantec usually take a while, so I'll post more info tomorrow once the scans are complete.

ok, here's what Symantec found:

Scan type: Manual Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Downloader
File: C:\QooBox\Quarantine\catchme2007-10-24_203909.60.zip>>fafbafcfeffcc.dll
Location: Quarantine
Computer: MAINDESKTOP
User: Cesar
Action taken: Quarantine succeeded :
Date found: Thursday, November 01, 2007 1:38:02 AM

Scan type: Manual Scan

And Spybot found Aconti:

C:\\WINDOWS\aconti.sdb
C:\\WINDOWS\aconti.ini

Plus, I got the error message for Spybot as well.

hi cesarper,

ok, here's what Symantec found:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine

those are quarantined files put there by combofix. you can remove combofix like this:

go to start>run and type in the window:
combofix /u hit "ok"
there is a space after combofix.

did spybot remove those files?
whats the error msg your getting in spybot?

shelf life

Ok, uninstalled Combofix.

Spybot fixed those files.

The error message that Spybot gets is the same that Symantec gets: "Spybot has experienced an error and needs to close." If I don't select an option, Spybot continues to run. Now that Aconti has been fixed, I don't get that message when running Spybot.

Notepad still closes when trying "Save As."

I haven't seen that other error message (with "automaticaupdate" in the message) since Spybot fixed the files and CF was removed, but I am hearing a warning sound once in while, like when you try to do something on the computer that isn't allowed. Nothing pops up to identify what the sound is attached to.
